Watkins lands in Kansas City and will be a boom-or-bust fantasy prospect once again. I do like that he gets a strong-armed Patrick Mahomes throwing to him, as the deep ball is where he has done much of his damage in the NFL. I will likely draft Watkins this year for his upside but be prepared for another disappointment. The Packers released Nelson and the Raiders signed him to be their No. 2 receiver after releasing Michael Crabtree. I don't like the move, but it's done and Nelson will have some value, although not nearly as much as his name carries. I figure his ADP will be too high for me.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Who knows how Watkins will fit in a new system with basically a rookie QB playing but I have to trust the talent hereNelson could be a massive steal if the Packers got his release wrong. Still, there are a ton of mouths to feed in OAK and he sure looked slow last year
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Coach Andy Reid said he's been moving Sammy Watkins "all over the place" on offense. "We were moving him everywhere," Reid said. "He hasn't had to do that in his career." In past stops with the Bills and Rams, Watkins has been a traditional X receiver on the back side of defenses, routinely facing the other team's best corner or seeing double coverage. Chiefs.com's B.J. Kissel writes the connection between Patrick Mahomes and Sammy Watkins is "real." Kissel writes Mahomes and Watkins have consistently been connecting throughout the offseason program, and fellow receiver Chris Conley said Watkins has picked up the offense "as fast as anyone I've seen." I generally stay away from this type of off season hype, but Sammy has been hindered by nagging injuries when in Buffalo and zero pre-season prep with his new QB in LA going into last year. Sammy has the athleticism and skill to be a WR1, I'm hoping he is fed the targets he will need to get there.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Don't give up on Watkins, who was a trainwreck last season. He didn't know the playbook because of when he was traded and the Rams weren't creative with their use of him. Kansas City has big plans for Sammy apparently, and if he can stay healthy, he's got all the talent in the world for a huge breakout. After being a top-three fantasy receiver two straight years, Nelson disappeared last year, posting more than 100 fewer points than the previous year and finishing as a WR5. Now that he is in a new offense and playing in the slot, we might see him split the difference in half.
Derek Lofland
Fantasy Football Maniax
Watkins has never lived up to his high first round pick billing, but he has a chance to be a WR3 in a revamped KC offense.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
It wouldn't shock me to see Watkins finish as the best Chiefs wide receiver, as I believe he's the most talented one. The issue is that he's learning his third offense in three years, which can cripple a wide receiver in year-one. Because of that, Tyreek Hill is the preferred option in 2018. Still, the Chiefs didn't pay Watkins $50 million to see 60-80 targets, so I'd expect him to be a WR3 more often than not. With Pat Mahomes under center and a bad defense, the recipe is there for increased pass attempts. Let's be clear - when you go from Aaron Rodgers to Derek Carr, there's going to be a massive efficiency decline. One positive from the move to the Raiders is that it appears they'll be using him in the slot, similarly to the way that the Cardinals use Larry Fitzgerald. Nelson isn't as physically imposing as Fitzgerald, and he's also got to compete with Amari Cooper and Martavis Bryant for targets. While Nelson will be usable as a safe WR4 play most weeks, he doesn't offer you much upside.
