Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Michel had a breakout postseason and that could carry over to a strong 2019 season. He does have some knee issues, but he should still be a solid RB3 with RB2 upside in 2019. | Freeman battled injuries in 2018 and he played only 2 games. He has had RB1 value in the past when healthy, but he is a huge durability risk in 2019 coming off a knee injury. |
Mike Tagliere FantasyPros | It was a solid rookie year for Michel, who finished as the RB28 despite missing three full games. The issue with expecting a massive jump in production is his lack of usage in the passing game (just seven receptions in 13 games), and the third-round draft pick of Damien Harris, as he's a threat to steal some early-down work. Still, Michel should provide RB2 value as long as he's healthy | Do you remember Freeman's rookie year? Probably not, because it had him falling outside the top-35 running backs selected the following year. In that season, he totaled just 248 yards and one touchdown on 65 carries. That's significant because that's the only year he played under Dirk Koetter, who is now back in Atlanta as the coordinator. While Freeman will have a much bigger role, Koetter hasn't been able to boost a run-game during his time in Atlanta or Tampa Bay, so the ceiling has likely dropped for Freeman. And that's not to mention Ito Smith, whose role grew as the year went on in 2018 |
Brandon Funston The Athletic | Admittedly, there's some fear of his balky knee, and a little usage uncertainty with Belichick's history of pulling the backfield strings, but his preseason's been strong and the backfield is lucrative (NE top 6 in RB half-PPR FAN PTS each of past 4 seasons) | Proven fantasy RB Top 10 upside, and with T. Coleman off to SF, the backup vulture threat is less a threat than ever - it all comes down to health (if he plays close to a full season, he'll be a bargain) |
Kevin Roberts Breaking Football | Michel was great last year, but he's had some health questions and New England has approximately one thousand running backs. He should be higher, but I can't do it. | It's all about health with Freeman. Tevin is gone and he has the skill-set of a feature back. I like him as a RB2. He just needs to stay on the field. |
Dan Harris FantasyPros | Michel dealt with a preseason knee injury that bothered him some during the season, but he came on during the fantasy (and real-life) playoffs, showing his upside. When the Patriots spent a third-round pick on Damien Harris, fantasy owners got worried, but Harris reportedly has not gotten many reps this summer. The backfield in New England is still crowded with James White and Rex Burkhead, but with no Rob Gronkowksi, the Patriots are likely to lean on the run a bit more. That makes Michel an RB2, though one that is better in standard formats. | Freeman missed almost all of last season due to injuries, but had put up anywhere between very good and elite seasons in the three prior years. With Tevin Coleman gone, Freeman should see an increaed workload, even with the presence of Ito Smith and others in the backfield. There are legitimate injury concerns with Freeman, but the Falcons may look to control the clock more and emphasize the run given their improved defense. All in all, Freeman makes a solid RB2, one with high upside. |
Michael Petropoulos BRoto Fantasy | Check out my article on BRotofantasy.com regarding Michel's inflated ADP. He was very much a game script RB with no passing game involvement last season and there is nothing that says that will not remain the same this season. He also has degenerative knee issues and has never played even half the offensive snaps in a game. | Freeman is a solid option at his current ADP but there is some risk, obviously, after he missed all of last season. Koetter has also not really been known for his running game. With that being said, Freeman is also only a year removed from 1180/8 total in 14 games in 2017. He should have a solid weekly floor. |
Nick Zylak Fantasy Football Advice | Honestly, I can't justify drafting Sony this season. Not only did the Patriots draft another RB early this season, but his knee is a concern. He's suffered a torn ACL, a fractured shoulder blade, multiple ankle sprains, a fractured forearm and three separate knee strains. Sony, unsurprisingly, has the second highest chance of injury this season according to sports injury predictor. You can also add volume reduction to his risk. We know that White is going to get most of the passing down work, and that Harris is going to take some of the early down work away from him. This backfield is very similar to that of Washington. Assuming everyone stays healthy, Sony isn't going to pay off his ADP. He would need a Damien Harris injury to be anything more than a TD upside FLEX play. Yet he's being drafted as a mid range RB 2. Save yourself the headache and just stay away from Sony this season. | If you like lengthy injury histories, then let me introduce you to Devonta Freeman! Freeman has suffered a pulled hamstring, a hip strain, an MCL sprain, a PCL sprain, a knee bruise, 3 separate concussions, a foot bruise and then finally lost most of last year due to sports hernia surgery. Aside from his terrible rookie season, he's been extremely productive whole he's been on the field. Now let's talk about his offensive coordinator. Dirk Koetter has returned as the team's OC. He had that job from 2012-2014, then he was hired as the Bucs OC in 2015, and then served as their head coach from 1016-2018. In that time here is where his teams have ranked in rushing yards per game: 27/32/24/4/25/27/28. So in other words, Freeman is a RB with a high likelihood of injury, on an offense run by a man that has no idea how to run the football. What Freeman has going for him is 1) His talent...and 2) There's no one behind him on the depth chart. They have a few guys who can join together to fill potential void if he goes down, but they don't have a single RB that's going to challenge him for touches. Therefore, as long as he stays healthy, he's going to crush. |
Kevin Wheeler Draftwize | "Devonta Freeman is in good health and hasn't had any setbacks at the start of the preseason. Based on how he has practiced, Freeman should be in line for a bounce-back campaign."
Sean Koerner The Action Network | chronic knee issues mean he could miss games. Damien Harris puts pressure on him. not ideal in any sort of PPR. he's more valuable in Best Ball as he will consolidate his value into several games he goes off
Bobby Sylvester FantasyPros | Sony has plummeted down draft boards with the drafting of Damien Harris and multiple reports about concerns revolving Michel's knee. These are both scary for fantasy owners, but the price has now dropped low enough that you can afford to take a risk on someone with legitimate top 10 running back upside in this great Patriots' offense. | The Falcons have been banged up the last two years including Freeman himself but don't be surprised if this offensive line surges forward this year with all the talent they have. If that happens, Freeman could explode back into the top 10 fantasy running backs as we saw in 2015, 2016 and 2017 with his fantasy points per game. |
Kyle Yates The Fantasy Footballers | We've seemingly forgotten about Devonta Freeman after his injury plagued 2018 season. Now, Freeman stands "alone" in that Atlanta backfield and is an incredible value in redraft leagues with his current ADP. Freeman's a solid bet for 240 carries and an increased volume in the passing game due to Tevin Coleman's absence. I'm drafting him wherever I can. |
