This offense runs through it's running backs. West isn't this good, but he's the beneficiary of a system. This offense threw to the RBs 119 times last season. That's insane.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
With the news of Dixon being out for the year, West skyrocketed up draft boards. There is always the chance that the Ravens would be unsatisfied with West as a starter and go acquire a better back, but until then, West must be drafted in the top 40 backs based on expected touches alone. With the Panthers drafting McCaffrey so high this season, it seems unlikely that they would miss an opportunity to get him plenty of touches. That doesn't mean, however, that Stewart can't also be heavily involved in the offense. McCaffrey can be used out wide or in the slot as well. Stewart has been a quality running back for some time including last season when he wasn't injured so don't sleep on him.
Brandon Funston
Fantasy Spin
I'm not in love with West's talents, but now that Kenneth Dixon has been lost for the season, he's got a pretty clear path to 220+ carries, which makes 900-1000 rush yards and 8-9 TDs very plausible
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
West will likely be the early down back all season unless the Ravens add competition during training camp. As the lead back, he has plenty of standard-league appeal.Christian McCaffrey won't take over Stewart's job completely, but it's going to be tough for Stewart to beat him out for touches all season. I'm done with Stewart as long as McCaffrey is healthy.
Staff Rankings
QB List
West is a safe bet to retain the two-down role on a pass-first offense. His ceiling is not that impressive, but he's cheap enough. With his main competitor for touches - Kenneth Dixon - out for the year he should return mid to low RB2 value.True, the panthers went out and drafted themselves a shiny new Christian McCaffrey this year with the 8th overall pick. Still, Jonathan Stewart is practically free in drafts, and should have similar production to last year where he finished as the RB23 in standard on the force of his nine TDs.
Sablich Brothers
5th Down Fantasy
Should still see short-yardage/goal line work (that Newton doesn't get); 18 rushing touchdowns over past three seasons; good bet to get hurt and miss time at some point.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Fresh to start last season, West averaged 4.70 yards per carry with three touchdowns in the first six games, but struggled down the stretch, averaging just 3.43 yards per carry once Dixon joined the backfield. He also scored just two rushing touchdowns over the final 10 games with Dixon, making him unplayable. As of right now, there is no competition for the early-down work with Dixon out for the year. Despite the fact that the Ravens have ranked in the bottom-five for running back rush attempts the last two years, West presents solid flex value, just limit your expectations for his upside. It's been a roller coaster of an off-season for Stewart, as he had his contract extended, but then witnessed his team select two running backs with their first two picks. While Curtis Samuel isn't a traditional running back, he will get carries. And to spend a top-eight pick on a running back says a lot how they feel about their current situation. It's hard to see Stewart finish with more than 120 carries this season and he doesn't catch passes, so we're left with non-starter type numbers.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
With Dixon pretty much ruled out for the season everything is turning up roses for West. I was able to see a bit of him when he was in college at Towson University because that is where I live and also went to school there. West looked dynamic to the untrained eye, but he was essentially playing against JV squads his whole college career. He rarely got more than was blocked for him, but he did have a very productive line for a small school.Carolina will probably be acquiring another RB this off-season, Stewart can't handle a bell-cow workload over a full season. When he is in line for 20+ carries in any given week he is a great start though. Whether it's DFS or your RB 3/4 he is a valuable asset to own.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
West has surging value with Kenneth Dixon ruled out for the year.I'm not really sure why people are so down on a physical back who still has a big role on a team that loves to run.
Corey Parson
RotoExperts
West impressed at times last season, but he is not much more than a journeyman running back. With Kenneth Dixon ruled out for the season, West value has skyrocketed. Stewart's days as the feature back came to a end on draft day when the Panthers selected Christian McCafferey. Auction Value $2
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
West will likely be the early down back while Kenneth Dixon is suspended the first month of the season.Christian McCaffrey won't take over Stewart's job completely, but it's going to be tough for Stewart to beat him out for touches all season. I'm done with Stewart as long as McCaffrey is healthy.
