FantasyPros
While it seems that the Broncos drafted Royce Freeman to jump in as the lead-back from Week 1, it isn't certain quite yet. Booker is said to have a shot at the job, but it also wouldn't be surprising if he was cut for Phillip Lindsay. The Lions backfield is loaded with several decent backs who are all about on the same level. It will be tough for most of them to find touches except for Riddick who has his job locked in. Expect much of the same, making him a solid depth piece to fill in during bye weeks and injuries.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Personally, I'm a Royce Freeman believer, and that's partly why I have Booker as low as I do. Could Booker get the majority of the work Week 1? Sure, that's definitely possible, but even if he does I don't expect him to hang onto the job for long. He's had and lost the starting job too many times for me to have any faith in him, and he ended the year last year with a -9.2% DVOA. However, he's still worth a grab in the later rounds on the chance that he gets the starting gig and hangs onto it-even if he's not that good, being a starting running back in the NFL is worth something in fantasy. In the past, Riddick has been a worthwhile flex option in PPR leagues but not worth much in standard leagues. Now, with the addition of Kerryon Johnson alongside LeGarrette Blount, Riddick's value may decrease even more. Still, he's a good pass-catching running back, so he might still get some work.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
There are reports that Booker will share the load with Royce Freeman, but I just haven't seen enough out of Booker to take that news as actionable in these rankings. I believe Freeman gets some leeway and plenty of chances to lead the Broncos on the ground.Riddick will continue to be a PPR fantasy option, as he has a clear path to the majority of running back targets this season with Blount and Johnson both not proficient as receivers.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
I love Royce Freeman's game, which is why I don't view Booker as a threat to him. With that being said, NFL teams sometimes do some weird things and make rookies "earn their stripes." Booker is someone who played behind C.J. Anderson the last few years, and the Broncos cut Anderson this offseason. Then they drafted Freeman in the third-round. What does that tell you about Booker? He's just a handcuff and not one that you should go out of your way to draft, as we've seen him in a workhorse role before back in 2016. It wasn't pretty.Possibly one of the hardest players to predict in fantasy football, as Riddick has been one of the more consistent RB3/RB4's in the game the last few years, but the scenery has changed quite a bit in Detroit.
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
Averaging 3.6 YPC over two years, picking Booker is a bet of him getting more volume than rookie Royce Freeman. He found pay dirt once despite receiving 17 red-zone carries, but also produced 14.8 PPR points in his only game playing the majority of Denver's snaps. Freeman looks poised to assume C.J. Anderson's leading role, which leaves Booker as bench fodder. The only RB with 50+ catches in each of the last three seasons, Riddick has maintained PPR value (RB 18, 25, and 26) despite compiling 776 combined rushing yards on 219 carries. Drafters are nevertheless nonplussed with a steady hand who has not scored more than six TDs in a single season or hit the 100-yard plateau since Oct. 20, 2016. Kerryon Johnson's three-down abilities caps Riddick's ceiling, but he's a useful low-floor PPR bench pick.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Could get first crack at being the lead back in Denver. Booker's per-carry average of 3.6 yards is 27th out of the 29 backs in 2016-17 who had at least 250 carries (Booker had 253). "He's got to come out and work and earn the right to be the (first) guy," Joseph said. "He understands that with C.J. gone, it's a wide open race. He's a good football player, but we want more from him, obviously." denverpost.com
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Booker is a solid talent but he has been a bust so far and he has competition. I like him as a late flier but I can't invest early in himRiddick has more value in PPR formats but even there it's tough to project him too high given all the bodies in DET now
Raju Byfield
Win My Fantasy League
This is Freeman's backfield but Booker has the talent to carve out a significant role
