The Fantasy First Down
T.J. Watt has had consecutive mammoth seasons with 27.5 sacks since 2018 but he is a scary fantasy proposition as his low tackle count (even for an OLB) and reliance on fluky plays like forced fumbles and passes deflected make regression a huge risk in 2020. His 2019 finish of LB7 is close to his ceiling and he's hard to draft as even a LB2 in leagues that aren't very generous for sacks. After a late season drop in snap share in Oakland, Tahir Whitehead avoided the move to Vegas, instead heading to Carolina where he'll team up beside Shaq Thompson in the middle of an iffy Panthers defense. He's expected to be busy but holding onto the role isn't a guarantee despite the lack of obvious competition in a rebuilding side that may want to test out replacements for the 30-year-old as the Panthers slip out of playoff contention. He's an unexciting LB3 selection.
Ryan Sitzmann
The IDP Guru
Watt has now had back-to-back 14 sack seasons and has already developed into a perennial Pro-Bowl player at just age 25. As an outside linebacker, his fantasy value will be suppressed in balanced/tackle-heavy scoring formats. However, if you are going to take an edge rushing lB, he's the best available. Strong LB2 even in balanced scoring formats.Whitehead has sneakily posted around 115 total tackles in each of his last three seasons and has been a steady LB3+ option for us during that time. He'll man the middle of the defense with Carolina this year and should have a decent amount of opportunity on early downs. Given his deficiencies in pass coverage, it's a serious question if he will stay on the field in subpackages or if the team will opt to use a Big Nickel package. Until we get clarity on his exact role, Whitehead remains a risky pick and could end up moving down in the ranks as the start of the season moves closer.
