FantasyPros
Despite them drafting two running backs, Montgomery likely isn't going anywhere. He offers something in the passing game both Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones don't, wide receiver skills. His 5.1 yards after contact was the best in the NFL last year, though the sample size was small. He is apparently dealing with a soft tissue injury, which is not ideal when you're fighting off three up-and-coming rookies who have been playing the position for a long time. Those types of injuries can also linger throughout the season, making Montgomery a risky pick at his current ADP. The "should have been" Super Bowl MVP has been underrated this off-season, but not by the people that matter most. The Patriots extended him this off-season and paid him more than any other running back on the roster. He was the only player who finished in the top-36 last year without seeing at least 110 touches. If his role grows, as we expect it to, White should be in the running to finish as an RB2 in PPR leagues and a solid RB3 in standard leagues.
Brandon Funston
Fantasy Analyst
He was an advanced metric darling in his trial run as a RB in '16, and he really only needs to prove he can pass protect this preseason to open '17 as the unquestioned backfield leader in GB
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Montgomery has plenty of ability and should at the very least compete for No. 1 running back touches in a great offense. The Packers did add competition, but Montgomery has the upper hand, and unless news turns sour for his shot as the lead back, I'll be targeting him.White appears to have won the receiving running back job in New England, which is a good place to be for PPR leagues. Coach Belichick can screw you out of points on a week-to-week basis due to game plan, but with this offense, it won't happen too often as long as White remains the primary receiving back.
Staff Rankings
QB List
As anyone who has owned former Packers RB Eddie Lacy can attest, the Packers can be maddening in their backfield misuse. Still, they are a top-shelf offense, and the lead back job appears to be Montgomery's to lose. As a converted wide receiver, he offers reception upside that Lacy never really had. There is top-6 upside if Montgomery can get enough touches.White scored three touchdowns (including the game winner) in Super Bowl LI, and there was serious talk that he should have been the MVP instead of Tom Brady. Don't let this one game trick you into drafting White in 2017. White's 2016 season was barely fantasy flex-worthy, and with several new passing game additions as well as a healthy Dion Lewis to leech catches, White might even score fewer fantasy points this year.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Comparisons are anywhere from David Johnson to complete bust. Last years production should be considered a floor (12.9 ppr ppg)I think we can assume that White owns the 3rd down/pass catching role in this offense after what we saw in the Super Bowl, but who really knows. He'll be competing for touches with three other backs who appear to be more complete backs than White.
Sablich Brothers
5th Down Fantasy
HC McCarthy: "He's a running back;" 5.9 YPC in 2016; led NFL in yards after contact per touch (2.8); GB letting Lacy go a good sign.
Derek Lofland
Fantasy Football Maniax
Montgomery has a chance to win the starting job and he would be an interesting flex option with RB2 upside in PPR leagues. He will likely be in a RBBC with rookie RB Jamaal Williams, who is pushing him for the starting job early in camp.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Last season, Montgomery only had one game with double-digit carries and it has to concern fantasy owners that the Packers went out and drafted three running backs this spring. Montgomery, however, apparently added plenty of muscle and improved his pass blocking this off-season which could make him a steal should he be able to hold off Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones for the starting role. While the Pats have what seems like a dozen weapons this year, we know Brady loves throwing to his running backs. Even if Dion Lewis stays healthy, this job belongs to James White, who has been among the most efficient pass-catching running backs. He won't be worthy of a start every week, but is a nice bye week fill-in.

Montgomery looks like a RB and really just needs to figure out pass protection. Role is still a question mark but the talent is there to make him a draft day steal.
Corey Parson
RotoExperts
Montgomery will start the season as the feature back in Green Bay and produce RB2 numbers. A timeshare with rookie back Jamaal Williams could develop later in the season. Auction value $18 Super Bowl hero James White caught 60 passes last season with five for touchdowns. Historically, it's been tough to predict production out of Patriots running backs. White appears to be safe. Auction Value $8
