Jonathan Stewart, Panthers could part ways in offseason

by Anthony Cervino | Wed, Jan 11th 11:11am EST

ESPN's David Newton believes the Carolina Panthers could "completely overhaul" the running back position by not retaining Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert or Fozzy Whittaker for the 2017 season. (ESPN)

Fantasy Impact:

It appears the Panthers don't believe they have a "long-term" solution at running back -- Stewart will turn 30 in March, Tolbert is a situational short yardage back and Whittaker is a UFA. Stewart, who scored nine touchdowns in 2016 -- his most since accumulating 10 in 2009 -- is beginning to show signs of aging. His rushing attempts (218), yards (824) and YPC average (3.8) are all down from a year ago playing in the same amount of games (13). Although he is still under contract until 2019, the Panthers could elect to release Stewart "with a post-June 1 designation to save $6.25 million under the salary cap." With an NFL Draft approaching that is deep at running back, Carolina could target one of the draft's top prospects at the position, Leonard Fournette or Dalvin Cook, with their eighth overall selection.
