The San Francisco 49ers have officially hired former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their new head coach. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

Shanahan, formerly of the Falcons, has officially been named new head coach of the 49ers. The announcement was made less than 24 hours after Shanahan was part of one of the most crushing losses in Super Bowl history. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the "plan" is for Shanahan to have "control" over the team's 53-man roster, while general manager John Lynch assumes "control of other facets." Their first order of duty is likely to address the quarterback position.
