Kirk Cousins likely to garner franchise tag in consecutive years

Mike Jones of the Washington Post believes there is a "high likelihood" that the Washington Redskins place the franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins for the second straight year. (Washington Post)

Fantasy Impact:

In the early portion of the offseason, all signs point to the Redskins placing the franchise tag on Cousins for the second straight year. The two sides appear to be ways away from coming to terms on a long-term deal. The tender, which is expected to exceed $24 million for Cousins next season, will keep him around for 2017. However, they will "lose all future leverage" with the signal caller in the 2018 offseason by tagging him in consecutive years. In this scenario, Cousins will finally be able to test the open free agent market next offseason. Without a long-term deal, 2017 could be Cousins' final year with the Redskins.
