Cam Newton to undergo surgery Thursday

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (shoulder) will undergo offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder Thursday. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

As announced earlier in the month, Newton will undergo his shoulder surgery Thursday. Schefter reports that the 27-year-old signal caller is expected to be sidelined for "about four months" as a result. Newton will miss spring workouts but should be available for the start of training camp in late-July. Although he is still slated a QB1 by most experts after accounting for a down year in 2016, Newton has work to do before being mentioned in the elite category he was in during the 2015 campaign in which he accumulated 45 total touchdowns.
