Chris Thompson to maintain current role?

by Anthony Cervino | Wed, Sep 20th 8:02am EDT

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden is suggesting he doesn't want to overwork running back Chris Thomspon. "He's so important to us on third down we just have to be careful," Gruden said via ESPN. "He's not the biggest guy in the world. We don't want him to get 20-25 carries a game and get a lot of pounding on that body. He's definitely needed in pass protection and the routes and all that stuff on third down and red zone. So we'll try to expand his role a little bit, but we don't want to go too crazy with him." (ESPN)

Fantasy Impact:

Despite the fact that Rob Kelley is dealing with fractured ribs, Gruden is suggesting that Thompson's workload will not overly increase moving forward. He is intending to preserve the elusive rusher's longevity for the remainder of the year. From a fantasy perspective, Thomspons has been productive thus far on limited touches, and I'd expect that to continue. However, in the wake of Gruden's remarks, I wouldn't blow my FAAB budget on him. Still, he is worth an add, especially in PPR scoring formats.
