Alex Smith and the Chiefs squander a 17 point first half lead

by Matthew Fox | Sat, Jan 6th 9:57pm EST

Alex Smith completed 24-of-33 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns during the Chiefs' 22-21 playoff loss to the Titans.

Fantasy Impact:

It was a tale of two halves for Alex Smith and the Chiefs on Saturday. Smith started off red-hot, completing 19-of-23 passes for 231 yards and two scores in the first half. Things took a turn for the worst when Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce left the game late in the second quarter with a concussion. Without Kelce, the Chiefs' offense sputtered and Smith threw for just 30 yards in the second half. Ultimately, the Chiefs were shut out in the second half entirely and they ended up blowing a 17 point lead. Alex Smith had the best fantasy season of his career in 2017 but this could very well be the last time we see him in a Chiefs uniform. Smith is under contract for next season but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has reported that the Chiefs are willing to trade Alex Smith in the off season and hand over quarterbacking duties to Pat Mahomes. This will be a very interesting story line to monitor in the off season. Smith is still a very capable NFL quarterback but his 2018 fantasy outlook will depend entirely upon what uniform he is wearing next season.
