Alex Smith signs a four-year contract extension with the Redskins

The Washington Redskins have agreed in principle to a four-year contract extension with Alex Smith. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

Smith will average 23.5 million dollars per year on his new deal and take home 70 million dollars in guaranteed money. The Redskins could never come to terms with a long term deal with Kirk Cousins after franchise tagging him for two consecutive seasons, The Redskins ultimately decided that Cousins' level of play did not match his asking price. Cousins will likely be seeking 30 million per year on the open market so the Redskins will be saving a significant amount of money per year. The Redskins do not have dynamic skill players like Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Kareem Hunt so Smith will likely struggle to replicate his career-best 2017 fantasy season in Washington.
