Samaje Perine to be short-yardage back

by Jody Smith | Broncos Correspondent | Thu, Jun 7th 8:39pm EDT

Washington Post columnist Rick Snider thinks that the Redskins could feature second-year running back Samaje Perine as a short-yardage specialist. "Rookie second-round pick Derrius Guice is expected to be the opening-day starter," wrote Snider. "Second-year back Samaje Perine is the short-yardage runner, and Chris Thompson is the third-down back." If these roles hold up, Rob Kelley will have a tough time making Washington's 53-man roster. Fantasy Impact:

It makes sense, as Perine is listed at 236 pounds and led the Redskins with 24 red-zone totes last year, which was twice as many as Kelley got. Guice has excellent size himself, so he could easily command a share of short-yardage looks. It's obviously early in the process, but it will be interesting to see how the Washington backfield shapes up in July.
