Dante Pettis must compete for starting role

49ers coach Kyle Shannahan says second-year wideout Dante Pettis must compete for his starting job this season. (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Fantasy Impact:

Pettis was widely projected to begin the year as the 49ers' number one wideout but that's apparently not a lock. Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd both had strong performances in the team's first preseason game. Meanwhile Pettis got just one target in his 17 snaps. It's noteworthy that Pettis had to play considering the Niners benched a lot of their starters. Despite all these concerns, however, there is still plenty of fantasy production to be had from this receiving core. Pettis should remain involved on some level when it's all said and done.
