Mike Davis heading into training camp as Christian McCaffrey’s backup?

by Adam Koffler | Panthers Correspondent | Fri, Jul 24th 1:32pm EDT

According to ESPN Insider David Newton, Panthers RB Mike Davis “might have the edge” at winning the backup running back job in Carolina. (ESPN Insider)

Fantasy Impact:

Obviously the backup to starter Christian McCaffrey isn’t likely to play a huge share of snaps as CMC handles a majority of the workload for the Panthers. Everyone kind of naturally expected Reggie Bonnafon to be next up after McCaffrey this season, but it sounds like Davis will be in the mix as well. Davis signed a two-year, $6M deal with the Bears last off-season, but was cut after just seven games. He’s mostly underwhelmed in six NFL seasons with three different teams, but he’s a veteran nonetheless and brings with him the ability to pass-protect, which is key to keeping you on the field as a running back. Stay tuned to Panthers training camp as the backup to CMC could be one of the more valuable handcuffs in fantasy football.
