Taylor Heinicke will start in Week 17 if Alex Smith is unable to play

Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke will start the team's Week 17 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles over Dwayne Haskins if Alex Smith is unable to play, head coach Ron Rivera announced Monday morning. (John Keim on Twitter)

Heinicke entered the team's Week 16 game in relief of Haskins and completed 12 of his 19 pass attempts for 137 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 22 yards. The team is optimistic that Smith will be able to play on Sunday night against the Eagles, but Heinicke will get the start over Haskins if Smith is unable to go.
