Justin Simmons officially issued franchise tag by Broncos

In a move that was widely expected, the Broncos have officially placed the franchise tag on safety Justin Simmons. (Benjamin Allbright on Twitter)

This news comes as no surprise and could merely serve as a placeholder in extension talks. As Allbright later added, "the Broncos' intent is to have Simmons playing on a long term deal." The 27-year-old Boston College product has been a force in the defensive backfield for several years, finally earning his first career Pro Bowl selection this past season. In 2020, he started 16 games, posting nine passes defended and a career-high five interceptions. He also accrued 96 tackles, which was just one shy of tying his career-best.
