Chris Godwin: Buccaneers using tag as 'placeholder' for long-term extension

by Matthew MacKay | Buccaneers Correspondent | Tue, Mar 9th 9:53pm EST

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin received a one-year, $16.43 million contract under the franchise tag for the 2021 season on Tuesday but the team plans to use this tag as a "placeholder" for reaching a long-term deal in the future. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

Godwin saw 84 targets alongside Mike Evans, Rob Gronkowski, and Antonio Brown in 2020, hauling in 65 receptions for 840 yards and seven touchdowns across 12 regular-season games. The fourth-year receiver out of Penn State also showed up huge for the Bucs during the NFC Championship game at Lambeau Field, catching five passes for 110 yards, including a 52-yard dagger down the sideline. The talented and explosive slot receiver should continue to absorb targets from Tom Brady in 2021 but will have his maximum upside limited once more in a crowded and deep receiving corps.
