Marcus Mariota ‘is the starter’ in Atlanta

According to Josh Kendall of The Athletic, the Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach Charles London said that, while the team has a plan for both QBs, Marcus Mariota and Desmond Ridder, Mariota “is the starter” headed into the 2022 NFL season. (Josh Kendall, The Athletic)

Fantasy Impact:

Former Heisman recipient Mariota gets his second chance to start in the NFL as the Atlanta Falcons officially declare him the starter over rookie QB Ridder. Mariota hasn’t started a season since 2019 when he got supplanted by QB Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee. Mariota spent some time backing up QB Derek Carr before getting his shot with a two-year deal in Atlanta. All four of Mariota’s full seasons as a starter in Tennessee saw him finish as a QB2 in fantasy, and if he still has some gas left in the tank, he could do the same in Atlanta. Even if you’re worried about the state of Atlanta’s offense, he found success on some tough Tennessee offenses, putting Mariota on the radar for superflex leagues, assuming Ridder doesn’t take over mid-season.
