Tua Tagovailoa unlikely to play in preseason opener

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said that he is "encouraged" by the idea of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa not playing in Saturday's preseason opener against the cross-state Buccaneers. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

Resting starters has become a common trend in Week 1 of the NFL preseason. In addition to Tagovailoa, fellow AFC East quarterbacks Mac Jones and Josh Allen are also sitting out of their respective openers. With the third-year Dolphin on the bench, veteran Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Skylar Thompson will share reps under center. Heading into 2022, Tagovailoa is viewed as a low-end QB2 with the potential to rise up rankings now that he has both Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill at his disposal.
