Irv Smith Jr. (thumb) exercising on the sideline

Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. (thumb) is no longer wearing a wrap and has started doing hand exercises on the sideline, according to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. (Chris Tomasson on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

Tomasson explains that Smith is "moving his hand around" as part of his sideline exercises. The 24-year-old missed all of 2021 with a meniscus injury and now could be in jeopardy of missing Week 1 if his hand isn't fully healed in time. Still, the team has faith that he will be their No. 1 tight end in 2022, and they remain optimistic about his availability for the season opener. Smith hasn't played since 2020, when he suited up for 13 games and caught 30 passes for 365 yards and five scores. He currently ranks 16th among tight ends in the latest ECR.
