Mike Tagliere FantasyPros | From the time Drake joined the Cardinals last year, he was the No. 4 running back in fantasy football. One thing from that stretch that is unsustainable is his touchdown production, as he scored eight rushing touchdowns on just 123 carries. He still averaged 101.8 total yards per game, but there were three games where he totaled less than 70 total yards. It was a mixed bag against this 49ers defense, as he absolutely demolished them in their first game, racking up 162 total yards and a touchdown. That was one of just two games where the 49ers allowed a running back to crack the 20-point barrier in PPR formats (the other was Christian McCaffrey). In fact, there were just three backs who reached 100-plus total yards against them. The next meeting between the two, Drake finished with 80 total yards and no touchdown. The 49ers did trade away DeForest Buckner, who was a a big reason for their success up the middle of the field, even if he was a better pass rusher than anything. They drafted his replacement in Javon Kinlaw, but he's a rookie with no experience. But again, knowing there were just eight running backs who finished better than the RB24 against the 49ers, we know it's not a great matchup. Drake should still net 15-plus touches in this game and be treated as a decent RB2. | This backfield has continually become harder and harder to project, but the matchup this week might make you want to avoid them all together. The Saints allowed just 3.65 yards per attempt in 2019, and it forced teams to get away from even trying. They faced just 285 carries all of last season, which amounts to just 17.8 carries per game, the lowest in the league. When you see that number with a timeshared backfield, it makes you cringe. In the first meeting between these two teams last year, the Bucs rushed 18 times for 63 yards and a touchdown. The second meeting led to just six carries for 13 scoreless yards. I don't know how that is possible, but it is. Teams struggle to run the ball against this Saints defense that's only improved this offseason. Bruce Arians has said that Jones is "the guy" at running back and that he'll have the job unless he screws it up. Against the Saints, not many will succeed, as no running back topped 83 rushing yards against them last year. Jones is the best play on the Bucs this week, but that's not saying much. Consider him a mediocre RB3 who has a low floor. The only way he finishes better than an RB3-type option is scoring. With the limited touches to go around, I wouldn't bank on it. |
Jacob Wayne Lineups | Kenyan Drake has been one of my favorite late first-round running back targets all offseason, but the 49ers' defense is going to make life very difficult for him in Week 1. Despite losing DeForest Buckner, the Niners still feature Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Dee Ford, and Javon Kinlaw on the D-line. The Cardinals' offensive line should be improved but still projects to be pretty average. This could end up Drake's lowest scoring week on the season, but he's still a fine RB2 for your lineup. | Ronald Jones was supposed to be a potential breakout player for the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers, but as the team has brought in LeSean McCoy, Leonard Fournette, and rookie Ke'Shawn Vaughn, it's become clear that the team doesn't believe in Jones as a workhorse. The Saints were the 6th-best defense against running backs in fantasy. The tough matchup combined with the presence of other backfield options makes Jones a risky RB3/flex for this week. |
Kyle Yates FantasyPros | Drake exploded onto the scene last season after the trade to Arizona and he seems poised to have another solid year. However, we might have to wait a week to see him finish within the top-10 at the RB position. This 49ers run defense is no joke and they're going to be able to overpower this average offensive line, which is going to make things difficult on Drake all game long. If Drake manages to score, you'll be happy you started him. Otherwise, it's important to temper your expectations with the elusive RB. Drake's a fine RB2 for your lineup this week. | Jones should still be the lead option in this backfield, but the presence of Leonard Fournette limits his overall ceiling. Additionally, the Saints DST is an extremely difficult matchup for RBs. All of those things point towards Jones being a RB3/FLEX option at best this week. |
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Drake had 31rushing attempts for 177 yards and 1 touchdown in 2 games against the 49ers last year. He also added 11 receptions for 65 yards. Even against a tough 49ers D, Drake should be a low-end RB1. | Jones II appears to be the lead back in this offense, but it remains to be seen how many touches that will translate in this RBBC that also figures to be throwing the ball a lot in a potential shootout. |
