If his health holds, his share of the HOU backfield workload should be major, but his potential in the passing game far outweighs his ground game at this point in career
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Johnson has never been efficient in terms of yards per carry, but has always caught enough passes and rumbled into the end zone enough to be a fantasy star. He was actually on track to finish as a top 10 fantasy back again last year prior to his injury so the upside still remains. With that said, back injuries and running backs don't mix so unless you can get Johnson at a discount, you'd be better off avoiding him this season. With zero preseason games, it seems likely that Mack will start for the first week or five until Taylor becomes accustomed to the offense and pace of the NFL. Even so, Mack's role will never be more than a split-backfield leader and even that shouldn't last long. If Taylor were to suffer an injury, though, Mack has high-end RB2 upside behind this offensive line.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
The Texans gave their running backs 397 touches last year, and that was with DeAndre Hopkins on the roster. That's a lot of work. The only running back they've added was David Johnson. While Johnson looked horrendous down the stretch, it's possible he just tried to work his way back from injury way too soon. It appears Bill O'Brien isn't convinced that Johnson is done with his NFL career, like some. It's possible that he's not as electric as he once was, but guys, the Texans gave Carlos Hyde (who's still unemployed) 255 touches last year. Opportunity is key in fantasy football, and Johnson appears to be in line for a lot of it in 2020, making him a low-end RB2 with upside for more should he actually be healthy. We never reached the expected performance out of Mack behind the Colts top-tier offensive line, so why shouldn't we have expected them to draft a running back? Drafting Jonathan Taylor in the second round was a straight dagger to Mack's value in any format. He'll be lucky to get eight touches per game in that offense this year.
Michael Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
I am COMPLETELY off of DJ this season. He has been a below average or injured back every year since 2016. I repeat, 2016. If you want to bet on a running back renaissance after three years of mediocrity, so be it, I will not be taking that bet.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
I do not think we will ever see 2016 David Johnson again. He joins a new team this year and he is now the lead back in the Texans offense and that should be an upgrade from RB Carlos Hyde. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should be a RB2 with some upside.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Johnson's now joining the Houston Texans and there is a huge workload waiting for him. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should easily return value this season. However, the last time that we saw Johnson, he looked like a shell of his former self. Additionally, Johnson's true fantasy value has come through his contributions in the receiving game. In Houston, with Duke Johnson also on this roster, it's difficult to see David Johnson seeing significant volume. If you draft David Johnson this year, you're betting on him staying fully healthy and him seeing a ton of work in the receiving game. Otherwise, he may go down as a wasted pick when it's all said and done. With Jonathan Taylor now in town, Mack's upside is completely gone. He's still going to be involved in this offense, but it might not be enough to be a factor for fantasy football. With that being said, if something were to happen to Taylor, Mack's value would skyrocket.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
Will be taking advantage of his 1 highly publicized run while injured in 2019, of him trying to run around the corner at the speed of your grandpa while injured. Expecting amazing health? Not necessarily, but we've seen what a 1 dimensional, rather bland back can do with the reigns, in Carlos Hyde, in 2019. I'll gladly scoop Johnson as my RB3Did NOT survive the draft haha. Coaches have said it will be a 1-1 punch with Mack and Taylor. Even if that's true, you obviously want the more explosive Taylor of the 2. There has been a bit of complaining about how his pass catching was never fully utilized in the pros, because he was capable in college. That is probably because he is terrible in passpro, never ranking above 60, according to PFF, and below 30 his last 2 years(out of 100). If you draft him, you hope for a Latavius Murray like roll.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Bill O'Brien has a long history of leaning on (often mediocre) running backs for 220-270 carries. Arian Foster, Alfred Blue, Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde all became somewhat fantasy relevant in this offence and David Johnson is next on the list. The real question is how he fits in the passing game and that will make all the difference. The other D. Johnson, Duke, will certainly be a hindrance but we've seen DJ prove impossible to take off the field when things go right and it's just possible he explodes for a big season. I don't love the odds of that but even though this is very must Deshaun Watson's offence, I do think David Johnson has a very solid floor and provides a nice safe pick with solid upside. And with one draft pick, Marlon Mack was done. That seemed to be the sentiment in the fantasy community! Slowly it's become clearly that this will, at least initially, look a lot more like a committee. That makes Marlon Mack a startable fantasy commodity early in the season with handcuff upside if Taylor goes down. Unfortunately Nyheim Hines is a limiting factor and that moves him below many of the other elite handcuffs and I'll likely be avoiding him in most situations.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
Back up slightly. I think Taylor will have more fantasy points on the season, but Mack likely to be the Week 1 starter and this is possibly the best offensive line in football.
