Connor McDavid starts season with statement game, scores hat trick

McDavid was flying all night and the Flames defense just could not catch up. He could have had a hat trick on his multiple breakaway chances alone, if not for some spectacular saves by new Flames goalie Mike Smith. The ice breaker came on a keepaway play by the Oilers' first line, when Leon Draisaitl set up an open McDavid far side. He also scored on one of his breakaways eventually, picking up the puck in his own zone, zooming down the right side and beating Smith short side top shelf. McDavid completed the troika on an empty-netter after some fierce forechecking and a nifty no-look pass by his linemates.

Fantasy Impact:

McDavid did not waste any time to set up camp at the top of the scoring charts and is very likely to remain there all season long.
