John Tavares suffered an oblique injury on Thursday during a Team Canada practice preparing for the upcoming IIHF World Championship in Slovakia. He has been sent back to Toronto for further evaluation. (ESPN)
Though the extent of the injury is not currently known, Tavares should be okay for the start of next season. Nevertheless, the injury is an example of why NHL teams are wary of their players participating in international tournaments. Tavares enjoyed a tremendous first season in Toronto in 2018-2019, registering career-high totals in both goals (47) and points (88).
