John Tavares named captain of Maple Leafs

by Brendan Ballantyne | Maple Leafs Correspondent | Wed, Oct 2nd 11:31pm EDT

John Tavares was introduced as the 25th captain in Toronto Maple Leafs history during the pre-game ceremony of the team's season opener. Tavares posted a power-play assist and two shots on goal in the 5-3 victory over Ottawa.

Fantasy Impact:

The Maple Leafs chose the dramatic route in announcing their captain as the rumours and speculation swirled all the way up until the team was first introduced on their home ice. The new captain is coming off of a career-best season that included 47 goals and 88 points. He's once again skating alongside super-skilled playmaker Mitch Marner and is locked into a top power-play role, so Tavares is set up for what should be another very strong season in 2019-20.
