The addition of Golden Tate is going to be a huge one for Stafford, but getting a more efficient offense from Joe Lombardi is going to help even more.
It's difficult for Newton to be a bad fantasy quarterback, even without a ton of receiving options, because of his ability to run. He makes for a safe pick after the top three options this season.

Jon Collins
Fantasy Sports LR
In the only three full seasons in his career, Stafford is averaging 4885 yards and sees a massive upgrade in context this season. Pass catching backs, improving TE/WR positions, Calvin Johnson presumed healthy... Detroit should still be in its share of shootouts, leaving lots of scoring for Stafford and co.
I'm as troubled by his lack of weapons as anyone, but Newton's work as a rusher gives a very high weekly floor. If the o-line holds, its possible that the current receiving corps is as productive as a Smith/Ginn/LaFell trio anyhow.

Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
There is another level for Stafford if he can refine sloppy mechanics. Until that happens, he will struggle with consistency. Still, he's easily a top-10 fantasy QB.
The "downgrade" in Newton's supporting cast is insanely overhyped. He's still a top-5 threat.

Derek Lofland
Fantasy Football Maniax
He has been a train wreck as a NFL quarterback the last two years, but finished 11th in 2012 and 7th in 2013 among fantasy quarterbacks. He's a fantasy QB1 as long as he is paired with All-Pro WR Calvin Johnson. The addition of free agent WR Golden Tate and rookie TE Eric Ebron could help his value even more in 2014. Stafford has reportedly looked great early in training camp.
Newton was the third ranked fantasy quarterback in 2013, despite not having any dominant skill position players to help his numbers. The only saving grace for Newton is the Panthers added WR Kelvin Benjamin in the draft and he has been as good as advertised in training camp. If Benjamin can produce and stay healthy, the Panthers may have enough weapons to move the ball through the air.

James Hatfield
Hatty Waiver Wire Guru
He can be a turnover machine, but he does put up over 4,000 yards and around 30 TDs a year.
Cam is a solid QB, but from Fantasy perspectives he is not quite top 5.

Sablich Brothers
The NY Times
Can only get better with new OC Joe Lombardi, a legitimate WR2 in Tate and new TE Ebron.
Back and ankle injuries could lead to less rushing attempts. O-line is shaky at best.

Tom Schriner
FFLockerRoom
We really believe that Stafford makes the jump this year into a prime-time fantasy football quarterback. We can't give him a top-tier rating just yet, but with Calvin Johnson and company to throw to and a backfield loaded with running backs who can catch the ball, Stafford should produce explosive numbers. He comes in at a positive 0.375 on the FFLockerRoom True Proficiency Game Average. http://fflockerroom.com/2014/07/25/2014-fantasy-football-draft-preparation-quarterback-proficiency/
***Newton has suffered a hairline fracture to the ribs and is questionable for Week 1 of the NFL season.***If I were needing to pick a quarterback to start up an actual NFL franchise, Newton would be a top-5 choice of mine, possibly even top-3. Unfortunately this is not the NFL, this is fantasy football. His overall offensive statistics have gone down each and every year since he has been a rookie, but you can't blame it only on injuries; the surrounding offensive cast is sub-par. Once again there has been a major turnover with the receiving group and to make matters worse, this new group actually is inferior to last years laughing stock of a squad. If he were on the Detroit Lions Newton would be a sure-fire top-5 pick. On the Panthers he is where he is, a QB2 with the potential for a very nice week from time-to-time.

Tozzi Brothers
Legion Report
We like Stafford to take an even bigger step forward this year. With the acquisition of Golden Tate and Eric Ebron, Stafford adds more sizzle to an arsenal that already included Calvin Johnson, Reggie Bush and Joique Bell. Reggie Bush stated that the Lions New Offensive Scheme is “exactly the same” as the one he learned with the Saints. With new OC Joe Lombardi aboard (Previously spending his last 7 seasons in New Orleans) look for him to bring an up-tempo look to the Detroit Offense in 2014. During Lombardi’s time in the NOLA, their offense ranked: 1st, 2nd, 6th, 1st, 1st & 4th in Total Offense. We’re buying the Detroit Offense and recommending Stafford as a no doubt QB for 2014.
The Carolina Panthers have one of the worst, if not worst, Offensive Lines in the NFL this season. Coupled with this, the Panthers have a completely new WR Corps in Rookie WR1 Kelvin Benjamin, Free Agent WR2 Jerricho Cotchery and Free Agent WR3 Tiquan Underwood. To top things off, Newton has had very little work with his brand new WR’s due to recovery from ankle surgery. The ankle surgery was to tighten the ligaments in his foot that has been an issue since his days at Auburn, which is very concerning for the 2014 season.

Pat Fitzmaurice
The Football Girl
Numbers have been volume-dependent, but little reason to think volume will ebb.
His subpar WR corps is less of a concern than his deteriorating O-line.

Jeff Boggis
Fantasy Football Empire
Draft with confidence, especially after Manning, Rodgers, and Brees are off the board.
On my 2014 all bust team.

The rib injury could cut back on him running the ball at the goal line.

346 pass yards, 2 TDs in W1 and played w/ high efficiency (0 TOs, only 32 passes); DET oozing skill position talent
Offseason ankle surgery, cracked ribs and no-name cast of WRs have his stock plummeting, and I'd be more than happy to take advantage of the discount

Fantasy Team Advice
Stafford has all the weapons to be one of the top QB's in the game today, the only question is can he bring his ridiculous TO ratio down (52 total INT's the past 3 seasons). He should finish right around 5000 passing yards and 30 TD's this season, as new OC Joe Lombardi will ask him to throw just as often as years past.
