Draft Strategy: Quarterback By Committee (QBBC)

Combining Eli with the right QB could yield Peyton numbers at a fraction of the price

Combining Eli with the right QB could yield Peyton numbers at a fraction of the price

With preseason OTAs in full swing, the NFL preseason and fantasy football drafts are just around the corner. There are many schools of thought when it comes to getting an edge over your peers in fantasy. One of the emerging strategies in modern-day fantasy football is Quarterback By Committee (QBBC).

The QBBC strategy uses middle to low tier QBs in favorable weekly matchups to yield top 12 QB production each week. We’re not aiming to match Andrew Luck or Aaron Rodgers’ production each week, but rather striving to put up a respectable QB fantasy point total using lower-ranked QBs, while drafting more elite players at other positions. By pairing up two late-round QBs for starting quality performance, fantasy owners essentially get a free early round pick to spend on an additional high quality RB, WR, or TE. On the whole, it’s easier to find starter quality QB performance late in the draft than it is to find starter quality RBs or WRs.

Draft two cheap QBs for high performance – try the new QBBC Finder

For those of you who get short of breath at the thought of rolling Ryan Fitzpatrick out as your starting QB, hear me out. Last season, 44 different QBs put up QB1 stats over the course of the NFL season. Yes, despite having only 32 NFL teams, 44 QBs ranked amongst the Top 12 QBs in at least one week during 2014. If you know how to pick the right QB/defense matchup, there are starter quality numbers sitting on the waiver wire of most leagues every week.

As recently mentioned on Ross Tucker’s Fantasy Feast podcast, Denny Carter and JJ Zachariason manufactured a QB6 equivalent by streaming QBs each week throughout the entire season last year. They publicly selected a waiver wire QB each week (defined as being available in more than 50% of fantasy leagues) based on favorable defensive matchups. Over the course the season, those QBBC selections produced an aggregate fantasy score of a Top 6 fantasy QB. Using zero draft capital and simply rotating amongst the Andy Daltons and Alex Smiths of the waiver wire each week, this duo essentially matched Drew Brees’ 2014 production (as the 6th ranked fantasy QB). While Brees was commonly an early 2nd round selection, the QBBC concept shows the value in waiting on QB in exchange for stockpiling RB and WR talent, which in turn, cannot be readily found late in drafts or on the waiver wire.

FantasyPros’ newly released QBBC tool streamlines this process and clearly illustrates favorable QB matchups on weekly basis. The QBBC tool also includes a key feature that allows users to compare two QBs’ schedules simultaneously. This feature is extremely useful because it forecasts which weeks Player A and Player B will have favorable and unfavorable matchups and informs QBBC planning. For instance, if you draft Joe Flacco in the 12th round because you’re excited about Marc Trestman joining the Ravens but you’re concerned about the Week 1 matchup at Denver, then the QBBC tool will quickly provide you a viable Week 1 QB replacement options like Carson Palmer, who has a favorable matchup at home against the Saints.

To outsmart your fellow fantasy league opponents, you have to find value anywhere you can. By leveraging the extra high-end draft pick the QBBC strategy provides, you can acquire that luxury, game-breaking RB/WR while piecing together a good QBBC Frankenstein over the course of the season.
