What Does LeSean McCoy’s Release Mean for Devin Singletary’s Fantasy Football Value?

The overreaction on McCoy getting cut has sent Devin Singletary rocketing up draft boards, but let’s not forget that this was somewhat expected. The Bills still have Frank Gore on the roster, a veteran who simply won’t go away, as well as T.J. Yeldon, who is a better pass-catcher than the both of them. We also cannot forget that this offense ranked bottom-six in scoring last year under the same coaching staff. Yes, they added a lot of new pieces, but it doesn’t automatically translate to success. This backfield has timeshare written over it, so don’t go assuming Singletary is a locked-and-loaded RB2 or anything.

This is the move that is going to generate the biggest overreaction. I saw some tweets suggesting Devin Singletary belongs in the sixth or seventh round. Please don’t do that. This is still a bottom third of the league offense. Singletary is best described as above replacement level, which is far from a ringing endorsement. Frank Gore has refused to go away for years. That won’t change. T.J. Yeldon will be involved as well. This smells like a 45-40-15 type split between these three backs. Whether Singletary is the 45 or the 40 is irrelevant. Both Singletary and Gore are worth owning, but they’re more of “start him and he won’t get you zero” guys than true upside plays.

McCoy being released isn’t much of a surprise, given Shady’s $6.2 million salary. The Bills will likely have a timeshare between the immortal Frank Gore and exciting rookie Devin Singletary. Singletary is the guy I want in fantasy leagues.
– Matt Barbato (@RealMattBarbato)

Life comes at ya fast, kids. After proclaiming his spot atop the depth chart was safe, Shady was released Saturday. Devin Singletary was going to land the starting gig before season end regardless, but the Shady cut cements Singletary’s starting status. I don’t buy into TJ Yeldon and Frank Gore as threats to take away touches from Singletary, and the rookie could finish as an RB3 this season.

With McCoy, Frank Gore, T.J. Yeldon, and Devin Singletary, you knew one of the first three was not going to remain on the roster come the start of the season. The fact that McCoy is the one to go is a bit surprising given his preseason usage, but not as much considering his age and salary. Fantasy owners should keep their excitement about Singletary in check for now. It remains a crowded backfield with an offense that isn’t particularly explosive. Bump Singletary, as well as Gore and even Yeldon, up slightly on your draft boards. But that’s all.

Let’s just cut right to the chase with this one and clearly state that Buffalo is a backfield that will give managers headaches this season. Frank Gore is the man who refuses to go away. T.J. Yeldon has always provided sneaky effectiveness when given the chance. And Devin Singletary is a complete question mark. Sure, McCoy being cut opens the door more than it previously was for Singletary to get a chance, but understand that he has two other capable backs on the roster with him. Singletary is a nice lottery ticket to snag in the back half of drafts, but he shouldn’t be counted on for anything more than that.

Well, folks what have we learned? Don’t buy into the talk of players and coaches during the offseason. LeSean McCoy was recently quoted saying “I’ve been told I’m the guy.” Well, apparently that meant the guy on the chopping block. Watching Devin Singletary play during the preseason gave the Bills coaching staff a chance to see his electricity on the field. Not to mention the ageless wonder Frank Gore is still chugging along nicely. If you haven’t drafted, Singletary should have already skyrocketed up your draft board, round six is appropriate draft capital. His pass-catching makes him especially attractive in PPR.
– Taylor Lambert (@TaylorSLambert)

Cutting ties with LeSean McCoy still leaves three other commodities at running back for the Buffalo Bills – the ageless Frank Gore, T.J. Yeldon, and rookie Devin Singletary. The Bills’ GM, Brandon Beane, has already stated that the move will give more opportunities for Singletary, but we still don’t know how they will work in the other two running backs. Keep in mind we are talking about players on the Buffalo Bills, who’s offense ranked 29th in total offensive yards last season. Singletary is the most talented back but it’s apparent that Gore and Yeldon will still get some work in 2019.

A surprise cut that was announced Saturday morning, the Bills have decided to move on from LeSean McCoy and go with Frank Gore and rookie Devin Singletary as their main two running backs. Latest news has McCoy latching onto to either the Eagles, Chargers, Patriots, or the Chiefs. He only averaged 3.2 YPC last season and saw his production plummet to 514 rushing yards, both career lows. If he were to sign with any of those four teams, it would be mainly for depth purposes. The Chargers (if Gordon is dealt) would be the only team he would have a shot at being the lead-back. The news of McCoy’s release opens the door for Buffalo’s rookie running back Devin Singletary. Singletary has put together an excellent training camp and could see more of the backfield reps as the season progresses.Expect Singletary’s ADP to sky rocket within the next few days as he should recieve the lion share of carries in the Bills backfield.
