Rankings have their place, except they lack a piece of essential information: how big is the gap between RB8 and RB9? To understand this, we break the straightforward ranks into groups of similarly talented players, called tiers.
For example, in 2021 there’s a top tier of running backs that includes Christian McCaffrey, Dalvin Cook, Alvin Kamara, and Derrick Henry, generally in that order. After that, a new tier begins. While there is general consensus in expert rankings regarding the top four at the position, there is more debate when it comes to selecting the fifth-overall running back.
