Dynasty Rookie Prospect Profile: Tyler Allgeier (2022 Fantasy Football)

Tyler Allgeier is a senior running back from Brigham Young University. The relatively unknown, zero-star recruit from Fontana, California, had little to no interest from Division 1 programs outside of BYU. He wouldn’t become a full-time running back until his junior season, playing linebacker early in his career for the Cougars. Switching positions proved to be the right choice for Allgeier and BYU, as the running back would have an All-Conference impact in the future.

Tyler Allgeier Career Statistics

Allgeier’s college career is a tale of two halves. He bounced back and forth between offense and defense in his freshman and sophomore seasons, only accumulating 26 carries on the ground. He set the Mountain West on fire in his junior and senior seasons, amassing a whopping 426 carries for 2,731 rushing yards and 36 rushing touchdowns.

Tyler Allgeier Dynasty Fantasy Analysis

At 5-foot-11, 220 pounds, Allgeier’s physical build is perfect for an NFL running back. His athletic testing is average across the board but is sufficient considering his size (4.60 40-yard dash, and a 59th percentile speed score via PlayerProfiler). Allgeier’s background as a linebacker shows itself in his running back film, and his willingness and desire to initiate contact are apparent as his runs are punishing. He doesn’t have the elite lateral agility that smaller backs showcase, but don’t mistake that for thinking he is a plodder.

Allgeier demonstrates excellent vision, manipulates defenders in the open field and is a decisive runner who won’t waste time dancing around. There is also a difference in testing speed and game speed, and Allgeier has game speed. His acceleration leaves a lot to be desired, but his long speed is impressive when he has the opportunity to get a head start.

Allgeier’s 2020 season was even more incredible than the gaudy rushing numbers suggest. When you look at the advanced metrics, he was top-12 nationally in breakaway percentage and a jaw-dropping third in Yards after contact per attempt with 4.72. His 2021 season was still highly productive and even more endowed with counting stats than 2020, but his efficiency in 2020 gives a glimpse of the ceiling he possesses.

Allgeier is more appealing than some of his 2022 NFL draft-class peers because he hasn’t reached his maximum potential as a running back. We’ve only gotten two seasons of seeing him 100% committed to the position. However, the sky is the limit for what Allgeier can become with continued progression and a system that will utilize his strengths.

Player comp – Alexander Mattison

Mattison and Allgeier share similar speeds and builds and come from lower-profile universities in Boise State and BYU. Mattison was a third-round NFL draft pick, where Allgeier would like to land, though that is unlikely. The on-field similarities between these two lie in their physicality as runners and how they use their size to their advantage. They both also have homerun ability if they have space to ramp up to full speed. Mattison’s pro career thus far is what fantasy managers should expect from Allgeier — a high-end backup that can pop an RB1 week if the starter is injured.

Landing Spot and Dynasty Outlook

After subpar testing numbers sunk his stock, the former BYU volume back dropped like a stone in the NFL Draft. Tyler Allgeier could get a reprieve, though. Currently, the Falcons only have Cordarrelle Patterson and Damien Williams atop the depth chart. Patterson looked like a player that was far from dust last year despite his advancing age, operating as an integral part of the offense on early downs and in the passing game. Williams is only on a one-year deal and resembled a player on the decline last year in Chicago. Allgeier could carve out an early role in the rushing department teaming with Patterson in a committee, but considering he slipped to the fifth round, the likelihood of him having fantast value past 2022 is slim.
