Matt Ryan impressing in Colts’ offseason workouts
Indianapolis Colts HC Frank Reich had high praise for veteran QB Matt Ryan after the team’s early offseason practices, stating “Matt was unbelievable, did a great job, great command – really, A-Z.” (Source: Pro Football Talk )
Fantasy Impact: Ryan, who is a 14-year NFL veteran, four-time Pro Bowler, and former NFL MVP, was traded to the Colts earlier this offseason after the Atlanta Falcons attempted but failed to replace him with QB Deshaun Watson. Ryan had the worst fantasy football season of his career in 2021, finishing as the QB20 overall, but he was forced to play behind one of the worst offensive lines of his career while also losing his former top receiving options in WRs Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. Ryan will be 38 years old at the start of the season, but he will be playing with an elite rushing attack that should help open up passing lanes that give him QB1 potential if he hasn’t lost too much physically. Ryan is currently ranked as the 21st overall QB according to FantasyPros expert consensus rankings, but his upside with his new team could make him a late-round steal, especially in 2QB and Superflex leagues.
Terry McLaurin reportedly unlikely to show for minicamp
Terry McLaurin is reportedly unlikely to show for minicamp with talks between his camp and the Commanders still far apart on a new contract. (Source: Nicki Jhabvala on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: McLaurin’s representatives continue to talk to the Commanders about a new contract, but that’s been the party line for weeks at this point with little signs of progress. Ron Rivera had said earlier that he expected McLaurin to attend minicamp so things obviously haven’t progressed as much as he thought they would. He’s talented enough that he can surely still have an excellent fantasy season regardless of his attendance at minicamp, but the more time he spends with Carson Wentz the better, so hopefully the parties can resolve their differences shortly and we see McLaurin ready to roll.
Robbie Anderson tweets that he is thinking about retiring
Robbie Anderson tweeted on Saturday that he is thinking about retiring. (Source: Robbie Anderson on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: The likelihood of Anderson’s tweet being a joke – or at least the likelihood that Anderson won’t actually retire – is extremely high. His contract extension runs through the 2023 season, he recently converted $11.6 million of his salary into a signing bonus that he’d have to pay back if he retired, and he’s just 29 years old. For now, don’t adjust your draft boards or take any action in dynasty or keeper formats, and expect Anderson to play for the Panthers this year. But, as any diligent fantasy manager should, continue to monitor the news in case there’s any other support for the notion that Anderson might hang it up prior to the start of the season.
