2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Marvin Mims Jr. (WR – Oklahoma)

Marvin Mims Jr. (WR – Oklahoma)

5’11” – 184 lbs.

Background:

Originally committed to Stanford, but ended up at Oklahoma, where he made an early impact as a freshman, going 37-610-9 (16.5) and following that up with a similar sophomore campaign of 32-705-5 (22.0). Enjoyed his best season as a junior, efficiency dipping a bit but posting 54-1,082-6 (20.0).

Positives:

Has been a big-play threat every year at Oklahoma. Typically lines up in the slot but can play some flanker as well. Smooth accelerator with good speed to threaten defenses downfield. Shows good footwork and the ability to change speeds to release. Runs patterns to all three levels, primarily short and deep patterns; commonly thrown the ball on shallows, outs, hitches, posts, and other patterns of that nature. Can be a threat down the seams. Stays on track through contact relatively well for a player of his size. Able to improvise and create opportunities when the play breaks down. Very flexible player who shows impressive body control and adjustments to throws away from his frame. Flashes the ability to snatch high throws. Shows the ability to come down with catches in traffic, including on downfield throws. Can be dangerous after the catch, and some of the team’s offense is designed to get him the ball with some room to work, or to use him as a decoy from motion. Some ability to run through arm tackles, with a no-nonsense approach after the catch. Active blocker who works hard to engage/sustain and approaches his role with proper form/balance. Has some experience returning punts and an interesting skillset for that role.

Negatives:

Has a thin frame, and some teams may consider him a slot-only player. Hasn’t been much of a volume receiver, although he could have been more productive with more attention, being open on a relatively high percentage of his routes. Might struggle to release against physicality at the pro level, at least initially. Not the snappiest route runner; doesn’t sell much at the stem, and would like to see more snap/hip sink, tending to glide through too many routes. Some double-catching and dropped throws; five drops this past season. Durability could be a concern because of his frame and relatively physical style of play.

Summary:

Very flexible receiver who has been able to get open at the college level because of his excellent combination of speed, quickness, and explosiveness, but will need to continue to add functional strength and polish his route-running at the next level. That said, shows enough intriguing traits to draw interest on the second day as a slot option who can threaten downfield or rack up yards after the catch on underneath throws.

Projection: Round 2-3
