2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Mohamoud Diabate (LB – Utah)

Mohamoud Diabate (LB – Utah)

6’4″ – 222 lbs.

Background:

Four-star recruit who originally attended Florida, taking roughly three-quarters of his 193 snaps on the defensive line (listed as a rush linebacker) and recording fourteen tackles and four sacks. Started in the following two seasons, transitioning to more of a traditional linebacker and posting 67-7.0-1.5 and 89-2.5-0.0. Transferred to Utah this past year and played inside linebacker, finishing with 58-13.5-5.0.

Positives:

Three-year starter who has done a little bit of everything for two major programs; made some strides this past season at Utah. Tall and long-limbed, with the frame to accommodate more bulk. Patient player who avoids overcommitting. Gets good extension to play off of blocks; engages from a solid foundation. Shows the quickness to slip by linemen when playing between the tackles. Willing to step into the hole and square up ball carriers. Rangy enough to pursue toward the sidelines. Overall flexibility is good. Length gives him a solid tackling radius. Has the athleticism to shade over the slot and work in coverage against some opposing tight ends and receivers; overall footwork and reflexes are at least adequate. Looks fast when spot-dropping into zone. Probably at his best when he’s allowed to get after the passer; shows pretty good hand use and flexibility as an edge rusher.

Negatives:

More productive than efficient. On the thin side, even in the modern game. If a team wants to play him on the edge, he is looking at the need to add twenty or more pounds of bulk. Doesn’t have a lot of sand in his pants to eat blocks. Not one of the most instinctive linebackers in the class; can be a little bit slow to diagnose. Level of intensity is inconsistent; often looks like he’s happy to let others in the area make the tackle. Closing burst is closer to adequate. Falls off too many tackles without much stopping power. Raw athleticism in coverage is more impressive than his pattern recognition/feel.

Summary:

A prospect with an interesting combination of length and flexibility but who doesn’t play with a ton of anticipation and intensity. Physical/athletic profile suggests a sideline-to-sideline player with coverage skills but looks more comfortable working his way to the ball between the tackles or rushing the passer from the edge, which it’s not clear he will be able to do in the NFL at his current weight. Consequently, looks more like a developmental player and special-teams contributor early in his career.
