Derek Brown’s Senior Bowl Day 2 Risers & Fallers (2023)

The Reese’s Senior Bowl week continues with prospects flying around the field. As the week evolves, players’ draft stocks can soar and plummet with the drop of a hat. Let’s check in after Day 2 and see who helped themselves the most and who could have dimmed their rising star.

Senior Bowl Day 2 Risers

Evan Hull (RB – Northwestern)

Hull, again, was arguably the best running back today in pass protection for the National team. Hull also flashed his pass game prowess in routes as he created separation in his routes against linebackers. His ever-present fancy footwork was also on display.

Jake Haener (QB – Fresno State)

Haener again ran the offense efficiently while standing out among the quarterback group at every turn. Haener surprised me today with his zip on the ball. He tossed a go route toward the boundary that fell incomplete, but not because Haener produced a bad ball. Haener’s ball placement on that throw was exceptional. He also looked good on the move, completing about a 15-yard out on the run with good velocity.

Tank Dell (WR – Houston)

Another day of practice means another day of Dell gaining separation at every level. While we can still fret over his size and outlier status if he “hits” in the NFL, we can’t debate his route-running ability and ability to get open.

Kenny McIntosh (RB – Georgia)

After leaving Day 1 with an injury, McIntosh returned to the practice field and looked uninhibited by the calf issue. McIntosh displayed immediate burst on his runs and slick jump cuts. He broke off a nifty run today that had the entire crowd enthralled.

Tyjae Spears (RB – Tulane)

The more I watch Spears, the more I see Michael Carter with a rocket strapped to his back. Spears was also a highlight reel leader today as he showed off his burst and swift feet as he housed a run in 7 on 7.

Jayden Reed (WR – Michigan State)

Reed has surprised me with his route running. The nuance and proficiency he adds to each rep are notable while he has put corners on skates. The speed was already a known commodity, but he reminded everyone in attendance today that it’s real as he blew past a corner on a go route for a touchdown.

Michael Wilson (WR – Stanford)

Wilson looked great today. He utilized his deep speed for a long touchdown. Even on shorter routes, he was consistently gaining a step on corners. I want to see if he continues this momentum into Thursday.

Senior Bowl Day 2 Fallers

Camerun Peoples (RB – Appalachian State)

Peoples has yet to do anything in Mobile to change my initial evaluation of his early down grinder status. He hasn’t looked explosive or elusive on his touches to this point while remaining a liability in pass protection. He has also been a zero in the passing game, as he’s been jammed up by linebackers on every 1-on-1 route this week.

Chase Brown (RB – Illinois)

Brown showed tenacity during pass protection today, but even the mightiest little engine can’t sometimes. Brown was tossed around like a rag doll as he attempted to slow down oncoming rushers. Brown also couldn’t gain an inch on linebackers in the passing game. Passes were consistently deflected by defenders when they traveled in his direction today.

Elijah Higgins (WR – Stanford)

Higgins needs to consider a positional switch. I hope for his sake that the Senior Bowl coaching staff looks to utilize him in the tight end grouping on the final day of practice because his reps at wide receiver have been a tough scene. Higgins looks stiff and has continually been bodied by opposing corners.

Jaren Hall (QB – BYU)

Hall finished Day 2 with another smattering of head-scratching plays. His ball placement was all over the place again today, with him sailing passes with inconsistent touch and velocity. Hall’s hopes as a late-round “developmental quarterback” seem to be fading with each passing snap.

Clayton Tune (QB – Houston)

Tune arguably had the worst day among the quarterbacks. He tossed interceptions today with little regard for closing linebackers in the vicinity of his receivers. Tune looks hesitant to push the ball at all as he opts for check-downs on many of his snaps.
