2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Keion White (DE – Georgia Tech)
Keion White (DE – Georgia Tech)
6’5″ – 286 lbs.
Background:
Originally attended Old Dominion, where he was originally listed as a tight end, catching eleven passes as a freshman before converting to defensive end and posting an outstanding line of 62-19.5-3.5. Sat out the following season while transferring to Georgia Tech. Barely played in 2021, then stepped into a starting role this past year, with an impressive line of 54-14.0-7.5.
Positives:
Relatively new to the position and enjoyed a highly productive first season in a major conference. Well-built five-technique with the functional strength you’d expect given his size; able to line up at different techniques but typically plays outside the tackle’s shoulder. Usually an end on four-man lines, and will occasionally play from a two-point stance. More explosive out of his stance than is typical given his size. Anchors easily at the line of scrimmage in the run game, with impressive contact balance. Works hard to keep his pad level low. Able to attack opposing blockers and drive them back to reset the line of scrimmage and collapse rushing lanes; bull rush can create real problems when teams try to run the ball up the middle. Has some suddenness to threaten with inside penetration out of his stance, demanding double-teams. Not the most explosive speed rusher, but bends a smooth arc to the passer. Shows a solid motor to work through the whistle and his stamina was good enough to remain on the field for most downs this past season. Even has some limited experience dropping into coverage.
Negatives:
Will be a 24-year-old rookie. Could improve his overall hand usage; lapses into throwing a shoulder too frequently, and level of activity to shed is not high enough, causing him to get stuck on blocks. Would like to see him play with more discipline on the edge; works inside and undermines the integrity of the team’s run fits. Could do a better job of keeping his shoulders square to the line when flowing laterally. Can be a bit slow to locate the football when defending against read-options. Rush approach is highly dependent on using his natural power to bull rush, and doesn’t really have a diverse repertoire of moves and counters at this point.
Summary:
A big, very powerful defensive lineman who put together a very strong season in his first year starting for a major program. Shows the ability to walk back blockers with his bull rush and threaten inside with quickness out of his stance. However, will need to play with more discipline and technique in order to reach his full potential. Has starter-caliber tools as a schematically- and positionally-versatile defensive end, and will probably come off the board in the second round.
