What Is Composite Efficiency Rating: CER? (Fantasy Football)

In fantasy football, efficiency is a key way to measure the effectiveness of both players and teams. Fortunately, we have a myriad of metrics and new ones being developed regularly to measure efficiency.

The problem is that there are almost too many. How do we know how to weigh each of them? Which one is the best? Enter Composite Efficiency Rating.

What Is Composite Efficiency Rating? (Fantasy Football)

Composite Efficiency Rating, or CER, is a solution to this problem. Its inputs are three of the most reputable efficiency stats: team yards per play, team epa/play and team success rate.

Using these stats, we can create percentiles to measure them easily across one another. Then, using the dependent variable wins (teams who are efficient ought to win more games than teams who aren’t as efficient), we can run a regression that tells us just how much each stat should be weighted. From there, the output is a number from 0-100 that measures a team’s overall weighted efficiency or Composite Efficiency Rating.

What this allows us to do is measure a team’s efficiency in a timely manner. Instead of pouring over a variety of efficiency stats, this centralizes it. With a glance, we have a pretty good idea of where a team stands in terms of efficiency.

This metric can also be used as an input to create other metrics. This offseason, I developed a “Matchup Score” that uses both team’s CER as one of its main inputs. Next offseason, I plan to test more metrics, as choosing just three might not give us the full picture of how efficient a team is.
