PGA DFS Advice & Picks: Charles Schwab Challenge (2024)

The PGA Championship was one for the storybooks (and tabloids). Golf lore looks kindly on major winners, a club that had shunned Xander Schauffele until Sunday at Valhalla. He held off a storming Bryson DeChambeau, who starred in my DFS pool that paid 2-to-1 this past week. Wins are wins, even if not a deluge of dollar bills.

Valhalla was too easy, soggy from the spring Kentucky rains. Despite its length, the course was toothless against the high-apex spinners hoisted at the welcoming greens like a band of archers at the castle walls. It still yielded one hell of a riveting final round with nearly every big name in the mix.

Don’t expect the same luxury at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, is a finger trap of a golf course. Despite its unassuming length under 7,300 yards, single digits under par has been good enough to win many times over. It is a strong field, headed by world No. 1 (and alleged felon) Scottie Scheffler. The greens are bentgrass and the passage to minuscule greens is occluded by giant overhanging oaks.

Colonial has undergone some notable changes since this past season. They were mostly meant to restore the historic grounds to its former luster, but with a modern approach to sustainability and drainage. The greens are no longer perched as they once were. Bunkers now have grassy escarpments and barrancas have been dug for runoff into manmade water hazards. Though the winning score might be a tad better this year, expect the same true test of the field’s accuracy from tee to green. I’ve packed my belt buckles and spurs, let’s dig in.
