PGA DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: The Sentry (2024)

PGA DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: The Sentry (2024)

The Sentry marks the first event of the 2025 PGA Tour season and is set to tee off from the beautiful shores of Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii on the Plantation Course on Thursday afternoon. Last year’s winner, Chris Kirk, returns and will attempt to be the first golfer in 15 years to win this event back-to-back.

There’s plenty to unpack at The Sentry from a PGA DFS perspective. I’ll recap previous winners and their scorecards, focus on relevant betting statistics, and provide a course overview of the Plantation Course. Finally, I’ll recommend two golfers worth inserting into your PGA DFS lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel.

Course Overview

The Plantation Course in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii is a par 73 that runs 7,596 yards. Featuring wide Bermudagrass fairways, plus bermudagrass rough and Tifeagle Bermudagrass greens, there are a lot of avenues for golfers to play well and turn in rounds of -7-under-par or lower at The Sentry.

There are four par 5s and only three par 3s, including just one par 3 on the back-nine at the Plantation Course. Water hazards and other obstacles aren’t very threatening but there is a lot of dramatic elevation change throughout this course. Many of these changes lead to the wide, expansive fairways running downhill, allowing strong drivers to reach 350 yards, setting up for short approach shots off of good lies onto inviting greens.

Golfers with a powerful driver and game off-the-tee hold an edge, while approach shots remain important, like it does on virtually any other PGA Tour course on the circuit. Putting helps but there are a lot of ways to avoid a shaky or inconsistent putter, especially with most of the par 4s between 300-420 yards.

Recommended Plays: DraftKings

DraftKings maximum salary is set at $50,000

Sungjae Im: $9,500

Sungjae Im has turned in consistent top-10 and top-15 finishes at The Sentry throughout the past five years. The South Korean golfer is equipped with a great driver, finishing 2024 ranked 29th SG: off-the-tee.

He’s 30th in putting average and 20th in birdie average, which is why Im has been so consistent playing well at a birdie-fest like Kapalua. $9,500 is good value, sitting outside of the top-six prospects, so prioritize Im in DraftKings lineups at this price.

Jake Knapp: $7,300

If you’re looking for golfers who can crush off-the-tee and take advantage of the wide, sloping fairways, look no further than Jake Knapp. Knapp is making his debut at Kapalua thanks to recording an outright win at the Mexico Open in 2024.

Knapp ranks 24th in driving distance, averaging 309.5 yards per attempt, while ranked 18th in approach shots from over 200 yards out and 75th in one-putt rate. He’s a great value addition at $7.3K in DraftKings’ lower salary tier.

FanDuel maximum salary is set at $60,000

Nick Dunlap: $8,600

Nick Dunlap won his first event as an amateur in 2024 at The American Express. Dunlap won another event later in the season as a professional and carried that momentum into the FedExCup playoffs, logging a T5 finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship during the first round.

Dunlap is making his debut at the Plantation Course, where he should have no issue torching the ball off-the-tee. He finished 2024 ranked 40th in driving distance, 12th in putting average, and 16th in birdie average. Due to birdies holding such immense value in DFS, Dunlap is a priority add at a decent value, available to roster at $8.6K on FanDuel.

Austin Eckroat: $8,400

Our final prospect in the same range as Dunlap is Austin Eckroat. Eckroat’s entering The Sentry 30th in SG: Off-the-Tee, 27th SG: Approach. He’s eighth in total driving, 16th in driving accuracy, and should be able to use his skills off-the-tee and from the fairway to set up plenty of birdie opportunities despite playing in this event for the first time.

At $8.4K, Eckroat is another value addition to FanDuel DFS lineups. His short game, which was a notable weakness last season, can be masked with his talent off-the-tee and on approach, especially at this forgiving course. Make sure to insert Eckroat into lineups as a second-tier talent available at third-tier pricing.
