2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Josh Conerly Jr.
Josh Conerly Jr. (OT – Oregon)
6-foot-4 | 315 Pounds
Background
A five-star recruit out of Washington. Josh Conerly Jr. rotated in lightly as a freshman before taking over the starting left tackle job opposite Ajani Cornelius in 2023. Allowed just one sack (plus two hits and 14 hurries, per Pro Football Focus). Was even a bit better this year (also one sack allowed.)
Positives
Two-year starter who’s held down the blindside spot at Oregon for two seasons despite having another legitimate prospect opposite him; plays in an offense that has become much more balanced than the zone-heavy Ducks teams of years past. Carries his weight well, with an athletic build. Has an explosive first step, with very impressive overall quickness and athleticism. Fires out with some pop to knock opponents off-balance and win the leverage battle right off the snap.
Conerly brings the type of toughness and physicality teams look for when they’re trying to establish an identity on the ground; takes advantage of opportunities to shove opponents into the dirt. Has allowed just one sack in school despite regularly playing on an island against some high-quality defensive ends. Lateral quickness in his kick slide is solid, playing with a sufficiently wide base. Nice stop-start to stick with opponents trying to work back inside. Active with his punch in pass protection, with power in his hands. Gets pretty consistent extension to lock opponents out of his frame. Anchor strength is above average.
Negatives
Listed height is on the borderline of what most teams consider acceptable for a tackle, so measurements will be interesting. Still developing his feel for positioning; easily athletic enough to reach any assignment, but doesn’t always assess where he needs to be as well as he could.
Would like to see him do a better job of controlling distance to minimize snaps where he sets up with opponents just outside of his frame, forcing him to try and restart his feet and recover and leading to some ugly wins.
Conerly doesn’t have quite the consistent knee bend you’d like in pass protection. Tends to plant his feet when punching, which can create problems if he misses. Accuracy could stand to be improved. Lapses into throwing his body at opponents at times.
Summary
A very talented athlete with the tough, physical temperament teams look for in offensive linemen, he has shown legitimate left-tackle traits and puts some sexy snaps on tape, ensuring he’ll be getting early-round buzz.
However, at this point, Conerly’s snap-to-snap consistency and overall feel are works in progress, especially when it comes to anticipation, positioning and technique. How much progress he makes in those areas will determine whether or not he develops into a quality starter or frustrates with a mix of flashes and lapses.
Projection: Round 2
