2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Shemar Turner

Shemar Turner (DL – Texas A&M)

6-foot-3 | 290 Pounds

Background

Shemar Turner started for the past three seasons, with his best year coming in 2023 (six sacks). Appeared in a reserve role back in 2021, finishing with 14-2.0-1.5, then stepped into the starting lineup the following year, posting 32-4.5-0.0. Enjoyed his most productive season as a junior (33-10.5-6.0), then posted another 36-5.5-2.0 last year to conclude his career.

Positives

Well-built player who could fit the physical profile of either a defensive tackle on an odd front or a five-technique on a three-man line; Texas A&M had him play both. Carries his weight well, with a strong build and minimal bad weight. High-motor player who’s not always one of the first off the line of scrimmage, but shows explosiveness with his first step. The team often used an odd front with two-gap principles, and does a nice job of setting a hard edge and walking back opposing blockers to constrain the running back’s room to work.

Turner has solid length to lock out opponents when reading and reacting. Active with his hands and has some heaviness and violence there to shed. Makes some plays with pure effort in pursuit. Effort carries over very well into the passing game. Gets his legs going after contact and can generate push with his bull rush, showing good leverage and mixing in a spin move off of that at times.

Bends a smooth arc around the edge when rushing from the five-technique spot, with good contact balance, a low pad level and a nice rip move. Could fit well in a defensive front based around “games” (stunts/twists). Blocked two kicks as a junior, so there’s some special-teams value as well.

Negatives

May need to add a bit of extra bulk to play inside for some teams. Can sometimes be a tick slow to locate the ball, but has some anticipatory elements to his game. Gets preoccupied with attacking blockers, missing chances to locate the football.

Can occasionally get a bit too intense, leading to some minor balance issues cropping up from time to time; has also been flagged more often than usual due to a lack of discipline. Turner wasn’t a sack artist in school, but forces opponents to account for him and can demand some extra attention, even on a loaded front.

Summary

A nice scheme-versatile defensive lineman who could fit in both one- and two-gap fronts, playing either the three-technique on an even front or the five on an odd one. Turner brings it on a snap-to-snap basis and looks like someone who will help set the tone as part of a defensive line rotation early in his career, with starting potential. Looks like a solid Day 2 pick.
