2026 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Omar Cooper Jr.

Omar Cooper Jr. (WR – Indiana)

6-foot-0 | 204 Pounds

Background

Omar Cooper Jr. was a four-star recruit who also played basketball in high school. Redshirted in 2022, then started six games over the next two seasons combined, with an 18-267-2 (14.8) line in 2023 and a 28-594-7 (21.2) line in 2024. Took over a full-time starting role in 2025 and has had an impressive 64-866-13 (13.5) season heading into the College Football Playoff National Championship game.

Positives

Cooper had escalating production throughout his career, culminating in a highly reliable redshirt junior year this season. Sturdily-built slot receiver who played on the outside before this season and still lines up there occasionally. Has solid play speed, with good burst off the line of scrimmage and through the route stem; doesn’t need to gear down too much. Was an effective deep threat before this season.

Suddenness at the stem allows Cooper to create timing-based throwing windows against man coverage. Tough player who’s willing to work the middle of the field. Able to improvise when the play breaks down. Offers a strong, reliable pair of hands, with just five career drops against 110 catches, and shows a knack for the acrobatic catch. Shows the ability to adjust to passes away from his frame. Came down with some very impressive catches through contact.

The Indiana product is a physical runner after the catch, with excellent contact balance and competitiveness to shake off would-be tacklers, and the willingness to lower his shoulder and punish opposing tacklers. Indiana liked to scheme him touches with screens, sweeps, etc. Very good run blocker with the physical temperament you want in that role. Sometimes lined up in a tight alignment for blocking help.

Negatives

This past season was a bit feast-or-famine on a week-to-week basis, with Cooper’s stats somewhat padded by a 10-207-4 line against Indiana State. Was fed a relatively high amount of screens (about a third of his catches).

A lot of Cooper’s work this past season came underneath off coverage. Beyond the screens, there were also a lot of speed outs, flats, slants and patterns of that nature. His frame is thicker than it is big. Catches everything within his radius, but doesn’t provide the largest targets. May require a relatively accurate quarterback at the pro level.

Summary

A very thick, powerful and tough slot receiver who almost plays like an oversized running back, being fed the ball on a lot of screens and underneath routes, where his excellent competitiveness and contact balance allow him to rack up yards after the catch.

While Cooper doesn’t provide the biggest target for quarterbacks, he shows acrobatic ball skills and very reliable hands within his radius, including through contact. Reminiscent of Malachi Corley. Looks like a pretty good bet to come off the board sometime on the second day.

Projection: Round 3
