How to Prepare for Dynasty Rookie Drafts (2026 Fantasy Football)

The NFL Draft is just a couple of weeks away, which means dynasty fantasy football rookie draft season is right around the corner. In most of my leagues, rookie drafts kick off immediately after the NFL Draft, so having your game plan ready now is essential.

I’ve put together a quick guide with some tips to help you crush your rookie drafts this offseason and set yourself up for success in 2026 and beyond.

How To Prepare for Fantasy Football Dynasty Rookie Drafts

1. Know the Strengths & Weaknesses of the Class

In the 2026 rookie class, wide receiver projects as the strongest position by a healthy margin, with tight end offering legitimate upside as well. At quarterback, Fernando Mendoza may be the only viable fantasy prospect, and he comes with his own limitations.

Running back is arguably one of the weakest classes we’ve seen in years, with Jeremiyah Love standing as the lone exception. Draft capital and landing spot can mask a lot, but on paper, this class looks fairly unexciting heading into the NFL Draft.

Beyond positional value, it’s worth understanding where the “value pockets” are within your rookie draft board. The late first round through the second round in Superflex formats looks especially weak relative to recent classes.

The third and fourth rounds, however, should offer comparable value to what we’ve grown accustomed to, driven by wide receiver depth and viable tight end dart throws. If you’re holding late-first-round or second-round picks, it’s worth shopping them for veteran players or 2027 draft capital. Those later round picks, on the other hand, may be worth holding onto.

2. Prepare With Mock Drafts

As is the case with anything in life, you’ll only get better with practice. Hop into mock drafts to understand where market value lies and identify which players are consistently falling to ranges you’d like to target.

3. Know League Scoring Settings and Adjust Rankings Accordingly

This may seem obvious, but if you’re in multiple dynasty leagues (or dozens, like myself), it’s easy to get scoring settings and league format mixed up. Double-check those details and determine which positions and prospects you should target.

In a heavy TE-Premium format, you’ll want to bump up prospects like Kenyon Sadiq and Eli Stowers. If you play in a “points per carry” or “points per first down” league, those uninspiring running backs suddenly gain more value. One size does not fit all when it comes to dynasty fantasy football rankings.

4. Keep Picks Until Last Possible Moment

We mentioned earlier that the late-first round through the second round of 2026 rookie drafts is fairly weak, and shopping those picks is worth exploring. That said, don’t jump at the first decent offer that comes your way.

Unless you’re getting a clear value win, patience is your friend. Those picks are currency, and with the NFL Draft just weeks away, they’re almost guaranteed to gain value as landing spots become clear. You’d hate to leave value on the table by moving too quickly.

5. Understand Team Positional Needs

This doesn’t mean reaching prematurely for a position come draft time, but if you’re on the clock and the best player available is Jadarian Price while you’re already set at running back and thin at wide receiver, you may be better served flipping that pick for a veteran player. Take your time when you’re on the clock, as there’s typically at least one leaguemate eyeing that same player and willing to pay up.

Dynasty rookie drafts are one of the most exciting parts of the offseason, and a little preparation goes a long way. Put in the work now, and you’ll be in great shape to add some key pieces to your roster this spring.
