Fantasy Football Scoring Systems
What is a Fantasy Football Scoring System?
A fantasy football scoring system is the set of rules that determines how a player’s real-life NFL performance translates into fantasy points. Every catch, touchdown, rushing yard, and interception has a point value, and those points determine the outcome of weekly matchups and overall league standings. Understanding your league’s scoring system is one of the most important steps in building a competitive roster, as it directly shapes player values and draft strategy.
Standard Scoring
Standard scoring is the most common fantasy football format. Players earn points based on the following:
- Passing Yards: 1 point per 25 yards
- Passing Touchdowns: 4 points
- Interceptions Thrown: -2 points
- Rushing Yards: 1 point per 10 yards
- Rushing Touchdowns: 6 points
- Receiving Yards: 1 point per 10 yards
- Receiving Touchdowns: 6 points
- Fumbles Lost: -2 points
- Kicker Scoring: Varies by distance and accuracy
- Defense/Special Teams: Varies based on sacks, interceptions, and points allowed
Points Per Reception (PPR) Scoring
PPR leagues award bonus points for every pass a player catches, increasing the value of receivers and pass-catching running backs.
- Full PPR: 1 point per reception
- Half PPR: 0.5 points per reception
Custom Scoring Systems
Many leagues use custom settings to create a more unique experience. Common variations include:
- Tiered PPR (TPPR): Different positions earn different reception values, such as 1 point for wide receivers, 0.5 for running backs, and 0.25 for tight ends.
- Points Per Carry (PPC): Managers award 0.1 to 0.25 bonus points for each rushing attempt.
- Points Per First Down (PPFD): Players earn 0.5 to 2 points for each first down gained.
Choosing the Right Scoring System
For new players, starting with a standard or half-PPR league is the easiest way to learn the game. Both formats are widely used and well-documented, making it simple to find rankings, advice, and draft strategies tailored to your setup. Custom scoring systems add variety and creativity for more experienced leagues, but any format can be mastered with the right preparation.
