New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia came into camp topping 300 pounds and feels stronger than he did last season when he arrived 30 pounds lighter than previous years. The 34-year-old southpaw threw his first bullpen Saturday, tossing fastballs and changeups in a 25-pitch session. (ESPN New York)
Fantasy Impact:
Sabathia is coming off arthroscopic right knee surgery which cut his 2014 season short. Sabathia made just eight starts in 2014, going 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA (4.78 FIP), 1.48 WHIP and 48 K in 46 innings. After also turning in a dismal 2013 season (14 W, 4.78 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 175 K in 211 IP), Sabathia’s road to a turnaround begins with his health and ends with his ability to get batters out without a high velocity fastball. Sabathia must resort to off-speed pitches to keep batters off balance in order to rein his rate stats. Sabathia currently holds an ECR of 355 and because of two big question marks – his health and his repertoire – selecting him much earlier than that might be begging for fantasy trouble down the road.
