Heyward went 1-for-4 Friday. He struck out three times but in the third inning, he helped put the game away. Heyward drove in the fifth run of the game and then came around to score later in the inning.

The coaches have been working with him on lifting the ball more to cut down on the flurry of ground-outs that he was producing earlier this season. Heyward was the big-name free agent signing among the positional additions in the off-season. He has been outstanding on defense, but his bat has only recently started performing like people hoped and injuries have nagged at him, causing some missed games. Heyward will likely produce better eventually before the second half is over.
