Guardians pitcher Luis L. Ortiz was arrested Sunday in Boston after being indicted on multiple federal charges tied to a scheme to rig bets on MLB games, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. According to the Department of Justice, Ortiz and teammate Emmanuel Clase are facing counts of wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery, and money laundering conspiracy. Prosecutors allege Clase’s involvement began in May 2023, with Ortiz joining the operation later. Ortiz has been on administrative leave since July 3 while MLB continues its own investigation. Fantasy Impact: Ortiz’s arrest all but ends his professional career. The 26-year-old right-hander is unlikely to pitch again if MLB upholds the findings of the federal investigation. Fantasy managers can safely move on, as Ortiz will have no role in 2026 or beyond.

Emmanuel Clase was indicted Sunday on multiple federal charges connected to a betting scandal involving rigged pitches in MLB games, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. The former Guardians closer had been under investigation since missing the final two months of the 2025 season. He and teammate Luis L. Ortiz are both being charged, with Ortiz reportedly arrested earlier in the day. The indictment alleges that the pitchers were paid to intentionally throw balls to manipulate betting outcomes. Fantasy Impact: Clase’s future in professional baseball is in serious jeopardy. The three-time All-Star, who led MLB in saves from 2022 through 2024, faces federal charges that could carry severe penalties. Fantasy managers can safely assume he won’t pitch again in 2026 and may be dropped in all formats.
