FantasyPros
Our perception of Ezekiel Elliott may be a bit skewed after his lackluster performance for fantasy last season. However, we need to remember the full context of the situation and recognize that Zeke was a top-tier fantasy option through the first five weeks of the season. He was the RB3 when Dak Prescott was healthy and on the field and was averaging a healthy 19.9 fantasy points per game. With Dak presumably back and ready to go for Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season, Zeke's a fantastic option again this season to lead your team as a RB1. If you happen to get him at a bit of a discount because of what happened last season, that's just simply icing on the cake.Ekeler fell short of expectations last season, but missing several games will do that. When he was on the field, Ekeler was still an incredibly relevant fantasy option that displayed his receiving prowess time and time again. Since 2017, he ranks 4th in the NFL in total receiving yards and he's tied for first over that time span with 16 receiving touchdowns. There's very little reason to doubt Ekeler heading into this season and he should be back in the low-end RB1/high-end RB2 conversation in Half PPR formats. Additionally, he does receive a slight bump up in Full PPR formats. You know exactly what you're going to get from him each and every week and that's invaluable in fantasy football.

Zeke is one of the most talented RBs in the NFL. The Cowboys offense was decimated by injuries in 2020. However, before Dak got hurt they were rolling. The concerns with Zeke are 1.) He's had off the field issues in the past. There's always a risk he acts like a knucklehead and gets suspended. 2.) If Dak gets injured again the Cowboys offense will struggle. 3.) The Cowboys schedule isn't easy. They play a lot of tough defenses in 2021. Washington's defense in particular is menacing and they have to play them twice-ugh! I think Zeke will do better, but that Dallas schedule doesn't have as many cupcakes as I'd like.Joe Lombardi takes over the offensive coordinator duties. He came over from New Orleans with the coaching change. That could be good news for Ekeler. Lombardi likes a lot of quick passes. He used Alvin Kamara a lot out of the backfield. If he uses Ekeler the same way, fantasy owners will be ecstatic. Ekeler is best used in a RBBC. He's not big enough to hold up with a full workload. Still though, he is an excellent receiver. In half point and full point PPR formats, this might be the perfect storm for Ekeler to return to fantasy glory in 2021. The question is Ekeler more like Alvin Kamara or Darren Sproles. My best guess is Sproles which makes him a risky pick in the early rounds.

Zeke has finished as an RB1 all five years of his career, despite a "down" 2020 in which he amassed 1,317 scrimmage yards and 8 total TDs. His rushing numbers were far from exciting, but without Dak Prescott and running behind a banged-up offensive line, he could be in for a bounce-back performance in 2021. Zeke has secured at least 52 receptions in each of the last three seasons, and he's the clear goal-line option for a potent offense. He shouldn't be ranked any lower than RB6.It's tough for me not to rank Ekeler even higher, but I'll temper expectations a little bit simply due to the talent of the four other backs ranked ahead of him. Ekeler scored just three touchdowns in 2020, the lowest mark of his career despite logging his second-most touches (170). He scored 11 times in 2019, and it's reasonable to expect positive touchdown regression in 2021. Ekeler's biggest asset is his pass-catching ability. He's secured 146 receptions over his last 26 games, good for 5.6 per contest, or 89.8 over a 16-game season.

Was RB3 in PPG with Dak, who now returns, while Zeke is in best shape of his career. Could be a historic seasonHuge line improvements with Linsley and NOW Slater at OT too, should be Round 2 steal with Top-5 overall upside -- just be wary of coaches preaching an RBBC appraoch.

Elliott is as consistent as they come: excluding his 2017 season where he finished 12th despite being suspended for 6 games, Zeke has finished 2nd, 5th, 3rd and 11th among RB's in his career (PPR scoring). In the first few rounds of the draft but especially with your first pick, drafting for safety should be your number one priority - first-round picks don't singlehandedly win leagues, but they can lose them. With Zeke, you know what you're getting - a top 10 RB who has never missed a game in his career due to injury; and with more uncertainty than ever in fantasy, a top 5 or 6 pick is well worth securing a top-10 RB. The slight concerns are the aging (but still good) O-line or McCarthy possibly turning Pollard into a Jamaal Williams type player but Zeke will still demand a very large workload and his effectiveness as a runner and receiver should mitigate these concerns - draft him with confidence in the mid-first round this year.

Follow the production in the first round. There's just one player who's finished as a top-12 running back five times since 2015. That player is Elliott, and as crazy as it sounds, he wasn't even in the league in 2015. "But Mike, Elliott tanked last year to RB11." The entire team sank without Dak Prescott, but in the five games with him, Elliott was the No. 3 running back in fantasy. If he keeps falling until the end of the first round, there will be a lot of championship rosters from that area of drafts. In eight full games with Justin Herbert under center last year, Ekeler saw 63 targets. Over a full 16-game season, that amounts to 126 targets. While I don't expect him to get there, he's one of just two running backs (Christian McCaffrey is the other) who I'm projecting for 100-plus targets in 2021. Targets are worth twice as much as carries, so even if Ekeler winds up getting just 12 carries per game, it's not the end of the world. In fact, he can still finish as a borderline RB1 if he were to hit just 200 carries on the season. The new coaching staff obviously brings on some potential volatility, but there's not much other talent on the roster at running back, so his role should be very safe.

Ekeler not getting goal line carries should not be news. In 2019, Ekeler had 7 carries inside the 5, scoring only twice. Ekeler also scored 11 total TDs that year and finished as the PPR RB4.

He's currently driving down the "best shape of my life" narrative street this summer, and why shouldn't we be viewing him with the pre-Dak injury lens once again?Filling the Kamara role for new OC Joe Lombardi, a healthy Ekeler could push his previous receptions career high (92)

Any statistical projection is going to love "Zeke" entering 2021. We anticipate him receiving the bulk of touches on an offense that should once again play at one of the fastest paces in football. That's a recipe for fantasy success. Of course, lingering in the back of our minds is how slow Elliott seemed to be moving down the stretch last season. Perhaps that was party due to the Dallas offense struggling under Andy Dalton, but it wouldn't be a huge surprise if Zeke finally hit the wall after all these years of heavy workloads. The cliff is coming one of these years, so I'd probably hedge with a younger/more stable option in Round 1 of my drafts this summer. Of course, there's also an argument to be made that fantasy analysts shouldn't overly rely on subjective takes like talent evaluation, which is why Elliott is still getting RB1 treatment from the community. This time last year we were anticipating Ekeler to have some struggles as a pass-catcher due to Tyord Taylor entering the season as the Chargers' starting QB. We know what happened next, and now Ekeler's arrow is pointing up in a big way, particularly in full PPR formats. Once he returned from his midseason injury, Ekeler averaged 6.2 catches per games and 90.2 yards per games from Weeks 12-17. Offensive line upgrades combined with a potential Year 2 Justin Herbert leap gives Ekeler a thrilling floor/ceiling combo for 2021 fantasy football leagues.

Austin Ekeler is your classic PPR running back. He's in line for a ton of receptions and all purpose yardage with the Chargers this year. However, TDs are not his strong suit. Ekeler found te end zone just 3 times in 10 games last year. In auction leagues, Ekeler is the poor man's Alvin Kamara. In standard leagues, yards are yards, but his lack of goal line work could hold back his overall value. Still, he's a low end RB1 in all formats.

Take advantage of this one year when Zeke will be available outside of the first few picks. He will bounce back with Dak back under center and be a top-5 fantasy option again.

Elliott was very disappointing in 2020, but he also did not have Dak Prescott most of the year and the Cowboys line was decimated by injuries. He also had 197.7 fantasy points, which was still 11th among fantasy running backs. I still think Elliott is in the RB1 mix, although this is a big year for him. He needs to rebound to show he still has what it takes to anchor a fantasy team.Ekeler battled some injuries, but still had 138.3 fantasy points in just 10 games. He should be a RB1 playing with Justin Herbert, if Ekeler can stay healthy.
