Hail to Fantasy Football
I have serious concerns that elbow will hold up for 16 games. I've lowered him outside of my top-20 with that injury concern baked in.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Cam is a major injury risk, but the Pats made an aging Brady QB12 last year. Factor in a healthy Newton's rushing upside, and he is a legit top-10 threat.Big Ben still has the talent and weapons to be an elite QB1. The problem is he's coming off a serious elbow injury and he's another year older. He is a risky, high upside pick to be your QB1.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Newton's 2015 MVP season is too far in the past to expect him to return to fantasy relevance. Even if his health cooperates, the Patriots have one of the NFL's worst receiver groups and figure to play conservatively on offense.Limited to two games in 2019, Roethlisberger had elbow surgery to reattach three tendons. He began throwing a football in mid-February, and he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in mid-March, "I'm throwing without pain for the first time in years."
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Newton missed most of last season with a foot injury, but wasn't very good in the two games he did play, completing just 56.2% of his passes. He has always made up for any deficiencies in his passing game with his legs, but at 31 years old and coming off two injury-plagued years, it's fair to wonder how much he'll contribute on the ground. Nevertheless, despite the less than stellar options at receiver, Newton will start at quarterback for the Patriots and they'll surely figure out how best to use his talents. That makes Newton a mid-tier QB2 with upside, despite all the uncertainty.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Cam Newton and the Patriots is such a strange combination. A guy with flair, creativity and verve into a team which is calculated and often totally lacks personality. I'm not entirely sure how it'll work but I don't have the highest of hopes. His high-rushing days are over and there's not likely to be a lot of passing in this offense. I'd be avoiding Cam in most standard leagues.Big Ben turned into Bigfoot in 2019-20 as an elbow injury crueled a promising fantasy season for Roethlisberger, Juju and anyone else connected to the Steelers. Therefore, the question still remains whether he can replicate his breakout (yes, that sounds funny) 2018 when he finally topped 20 fantasy points a game. My take is that he'll struggle without AB, but I still believe this offense has enough quality to make him a solid fantasy option in 2020. Take him as your second QB at the end of drafts if you're preferred pick is on the risky side and you have a big bench.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
The last time we saw Newton on a football field, he didn't look so great. His season was ended in 2019 due to a Lisfranc injury that could affect his mobility moving forward, and he also had shoulder surgery after the 2018 season. In the two full games he played in 2019, he rushed for negative two yards. NEGATIVE. He needs the mobility in order to remain relevant in fantasy. Why? Well, do you know how many times he's thrown more than 24 touchdowns in a season? Once. Jimmy Garoppolo threw 27 last year. I'm not saying that Newton doesn't have any mobility anymore, but rather that he's lost a lot of it. Newton rushed for at least 539 yards in each of his first five seasons. Since then, he's topped 488 rushing yards once (over four years). On top of that, there've been just three quarterbacks who've rushed for 500 yards after turning 30 years old. Sure, Newton is a physical specimen, but that's also what likely led to his injuries, as you're not supposed to be as big as he is and move the way he does. Now you add in a shortened offseason, a new playbook, and new set of wide receivers, yet he's still expected to return to the old days? He's going to try, that much is certain. I'm guessing we get Newton Lite, something similar to what we saw in 2016 where he rushed for 359 yards and five touchdowns. I wouldn't want to draft him with ultra-high expectations, and for what it's worth, his draft position is perfectly fine, as he's going around the QB15 in Yahoo and ESPN leagues. By drafting him there, you have no qualms about cutting him for a streamer if things don't work out. Stidham will be waiting in the wings because you don't sign Newton to sit him on the bench. This is one of the weirdest offseasons in NFL history. It's uncharted territory with so many question marks. Then you add in Roethlisberger, who's been rehabbing from an elbow injury that had him tear three tendons in his throwing arm. Yikes. His teammates have said he looks good while throwing the ball around, and have also said he's lost weight, and looks lighter on his feet. Many are undervaluing the Steelers this year due to what happened last year, but don't forget they averaged 66.4 and 66.1 plays per game in 2017 and 2018, while averaging just 58.6 plays per game in 2019. That amounts to an extra 120-plus plays for this offense with Roethlisberger back. The pass attempts dropped from 687 to 510. While that 687 number from 2018 was sky-high, the Steelers continually have averaged 585-610 pass attempts. We can talk about Roethlisberger throwing at least 26 touchdowns in six of his last eight seasons and that he's averaged at least 7.5 yards per attempt each year from 2014-2018, but none of that matters if his elbow isn't right. It adds a level of risk to the entire roster, though he was apparently playing through some elbow pain for quite some time, and it makes sense considering how three tendons finally snapped. We'll talk about it throughout the season in The Primer, but you should also know that Roethlisberger has been horrendous on the road over the last six years, averaging just 15.22 fantasy points per game compared to the 22.19 fantasy points per game at home. He opens the season on the road against the Giants, which is a juicy matchup, but should you trust him coming off the arm injury? I'd probably play it safe and stream him throughout the year once we know he's healthy.

I sincerely hope he can do well in New England but enough with the videos and Twitter #HypeSZN, don't talk about it, be about it. If Cam is unable to get done under Belichick, he is likely done. Could be fantasy QB steal of the year though...Big Ben Fantasy Splits = Hardpass

Cam Newton has now been signed by the New England Patriots and will immediately step in as the starter. While there may be some attempt by the Patriots to claim that this is an "open competition" this offseason, a healthy Cam Newton is immensely more talented than Jarrett Stidham. Newton will be used heavily in the running game in this offense, which is fantasy gold. Additionally, the Patriots only signed Newton to a one-year deal, which means that they can used him heavily and not worry about long-term consequences. I'm expecting Newton to carry the ball over 115 times this season, which immediately puts him in the Top-10 fantasy QB conversation.Ben's currently being drafted outside the top-12 QBs, but he has an extremely favorable matchup in Week 1 against the Giants. Having missed most of 2019 due to injury makes his value a major a question mark right now, but taking a shot on him could pay off in a big way right out of the gates.

Back in 2018 when Ben Roethlisberger was healthy, the Steelers were the most pass-heavy team when the game was within a score (66.4%) and they were No. 1 in pass rate when trailing (81.5%). @YardsPerGretch

Now in New England, Newton will have a chance to be fantasy relevant once again. With a solid trio of WRs in Julian Edelman, Mohamed Sanu, and N'Keal Harry, Cam should always have somewhere to go with the ball. Add his rushing value and you have a potential top-12 QB.Coming off an elbow injury that cost him his entire 2019 season, Roethlisberger is going to have to prove a lot of doubters wrong and show that he's still got it. It helps when you've got WR's like Juju Smith Shuster, Diontae Johnson, and rookie Chase Claypool. I expect Ben to be slinging it all season long for better or worse. Could be a volatile player to rely on.

His 2020 home will determine a ton. With a new HC and OC in place in Carolina, Newton's Panther status is up in the air. This ranking assumes he remains, where he'd legitimately offer Cheat Code upside in Joe Brady's LSU-insired Spread / RPO attack. A healthy Cam is tailor-made to this offense, and the early reports suggest he'll be back
